How long until people view meeting your significant other online as socially acceptable?

How long do you think it'll be until most people won't even do a double-take or raise an eyebrow if you tell them you met your girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse online?

I figure it'll be like 2 more years or so, as more and more people realize that it's a reasonable means of meeting "normal" people.

hmm, my parents met via a computer match up dance at the university they were attending in 1962

not exactly "online" , but computers being involved with getting people together has been around a long time, i think it is already "normal"

I met my current GF online about 2 months ago. I still feel awkward tho' whenever someone asks me how we met. The typical response seems to be something along the lines of "Oh? There's a lot of scary people online isn't there?" I usually tell them that that's generally confined to just Anandtech.

For the most part I think it's socially acceptable already, but I voted 1 more year just so the older generations catch on too.

As long as you and your GF are happy, who cares what's considered "socially acceptable" RishiS.

It shouldnt be a big deal. I dated someone I met on ICQ a few years back, and she was a great person.

A lot of the goofballs at my work still think it' some scary, taboo thing to do from the offhanded comments I hear sometimes. I hear them in other circles as well. When are people going to get a clue that just because you meet someone two doors down from you doesn't mean that they can't turn out to be some psycho stalker. There is no difference in how someone could turnout wheather you meet them in the 'real world' or online. Good and bad people can be found anywhere.

I hooked up my friend with his current girl through the net... the first time they spoke to each other, saw each other at all was in person... but I had talked to a girl online for 3+ years, and it's her best friend. my friend and that girl are crazy about each other now. thanks to me!

of course the girl i mentioned is nuts about me too.. hehe

It really depends on who you tell and their perceptions of meeting people online.

My co-workers think I met my spouse through a local friend, where as everyone else (friends & family) knows that I met her online.

My friend met his now wife online (Quake DM server... heh).

I think it's cool and no problem socially.

Go out and meet people!

By meeting people online and getting together in person, that is technically "going out and meeting people."

I voted 1 year. My cuddle buddy is all freaked out about people "finding out we met online", so he's insisting we tell anyone who asks we met in the coffee shop where we arranged to meet after exchanging a few e-mails. Silly boy.

Well, that depends. To your average joe, I doubt he/she will have much problem with it.

To your average snob, they will find it socially unacceptable until something else comes along. As long as meeting SO's online is at the bottom rung of the ladder, there are going to be people who will turn up their noses at it.

Perhaps if mail-order brides become more popular, meeting people online will move up a notch.

Well what acquaintances think isn't going to change how I feel about my GF, but I'm personally not at a point where I can easily say to anyone and everyone "Oh yeah, we met online," like I could easily say "We met through a mutual friend" or "I smacked her ass at a club, and we took it from there."

Well... I guess it's "technically" true... You didn't really "meet" until then... heh
