People are probably changing razor blades too often. I shave my legs every few days, and a mach 3 cartridge lasts about 3 months.

Is this you?
The great thing about being 200 pounds overweight is that you never need to worry about looking good.

until you realize that a few dollars in double edged razors will last years and save $$ over gilette stuff.

Yeah, but that requires honing technique and focus so you don't slice your face, most people are simply too lazy for that; even if it does provide a far superior shave. I love my Merkur Futur, but it isn't for everyone.

I'll let you in on a little secret. I bought 250 Mach 3 blades off ebay in 2004 for $192.50 (.77 apiece). Walmart is selling them for $2.89 apiece. That would be the equivalent of 250X2.89 = $722.50 today. BLS inflation calculator says $192 is only worth $243 today. Guess who is getting f'd in the ass (hint: you guys who buy Gillette)? Not to mention I bet the quality has gone down in the past decade since Gillette has shareholders to appease.

These razors have gone with me to 3 different states and to 6 different places in the past 11 years. They are so small that it's not a big deal, and if I have a buddy stay the night who forgot his razor I got him covered. Still have 48 left over, one blade seems to last a long time - at least a month and I shave about twice a week (telework a lot). My burn rate (including giving some to friends) is 1.5 razors/month, so it will be another 6+ years before I have to worry about razors again. I remember my dad was like wtf when I told him I bought 250 razors to beat rising costs that Gillette would inevitably pass down to us. Now he thinks it was a great idea.

In 2021 I'll probably check out Murkur, or just find the cheapest supplier of Mach3's and buy bulk again which should should last me close to retirement age. Actually, I may try Murkur now and just buy bulk razors (500-1000) if I like them. Never have to worry about buying razors for decades, and who cares if they raise prices.

You got lucky that they weren't counterfeits, especially back then. Maybe not so important as electric toothbrush heads (I've pretty much given up on buying those on ebay or amazon).

You're supposed to change a Mach3 when the indicator strip goes... Problem is that I can make that strip disappear in a single shave of my head -- okay, more like 2 or 3. I've been using the same blade for a month, 2 or 3 times a week now. Strip was nice and lubricating when it lasted.

I would consider giving a DE razor a try, but the word "razor" accompanied by the term "learning curve" generally aren't two things I want going together.

DE razors were originally called "safety razors". Honestly, they're not much harder or more dangerous to use than a cartridge razor. It just boils down to getting the angle and pressure right. Truth be told, I've nicked myself more often when I was using the cheap disposables that I have with my DE.

Ugh... electric toothbrush heads. Now THERE'S a fucking racket if there ever was one. They're so soft to begin with that I feel like I have to brush more or bear down, so they wear out faster than any manual toothbrush I've used. I have a sonicare and an oral-B collecting dust because I got sick of paying out the ass for more brushes that didn't even work as well.

If razors are an expensive item for you, how do you manage to pay for your servants to shave you,.. oh, wait - you shave yourself,...

Wow.

I am so sorry.

The first blade pulls the hair out as it cuts which causes the next blade to cut the hair below the surface. As long as you don't have curly hair which gets ingrown this means that five o'clock shadow takes longer to appear than with the single edge in a DE razor.

If the first blade is pulling the hair, it is because it is dull and shit. Change the razor. The first blade should cut the hair, the next 157 should just be for looks. A safety razor is superior in that the blades are so cheap, you are just fine swapping them out when it starts to tug a bit.

If you want to remove a 5 o' clock shadow with tugging, be a fucking man about it and use an epilator.

curious how careful do you need to be when you shave with one of these. I ask because im very lazy when i shave and normally do it at light speed, i never cut myself using gillettes blades and such. but woudl give these a try if i didnt have to worry about killing myself

They seem to shave just like any of the other ones to me.

You can get a nick if you go real fast, but have had no problem at all from the first time i used it.

I've been using Kroger's generic mach 3 disposables called speed 3s for years. They are great. Just bought a 4 pack for I think $5.

You can buy 100 Personna for $10.

I used to use the Mach 3 and like the Personna with the German Razor much better.

Maybe my beard is just really coarse, any electric razor feels like it is ripping hair out of my face, and Mach 3's wear out in one week.

The DE's just work very well here, like I mentioned, the wife even has tried it out and likes it.

I might get around to trying some other soaps out.

Things are odd at the moment or might have.

Depends greatly on how thick and coarse your hair is, my beard's similar to a Brillo pad. If I used the same Mach 3 Cart for 3 months I would probably be bleeding to the point I'd have to go to the ER. When I used Mach 3s I'd clean my carts well and soak them in alcohol after each use to extend the life. And shaving 3 times a week a cart would last me about 2 weeks before it became dull enough to where I could pretty easily make my face look like I have a bad outbreak of something bad from using it. I envy men with baby soft hair who can use the same blade for half a year lol. Right now I use 1 DE blade a week, but I got a 100 pack for like $18 bucks so I'm not really worried about the cost

First, OP, most of those generic razors are supplied by Gillette or other large manufacturers. Kroger doesn't have their own manufacturing plant. So, Gillette makes money there as well.

As mentioned by others, like any other product, brand recognition drives a lot of sales. People are hesitant to change once they find something they like. Why would you change if you enjoy the product and don't see the cost as a hurdle?

There are many other ways to save money, more money than changing razors. How many of you shop your auto/home insurance annually? Or electricity (if you live in a state that has deregulation)?

Life isn't about living frugally, at least not in my world. Otherwise, I'd drive the cheapest car I could find (afterall, all cars are just transportation modes, right?), get the cheapest phone, live in a trailer, and the myriad of other ways that I can live cheaply. Nah, not for me. I'm doing fine with my Gillette.

I have really course hair too, but I usually shave right after a shower so it's a lot softer. Blades last longer

I wonder who designs some of the shit razors out there. Mach 3 and Sensor 3 are made by the same company, but one of them works while the other sucks. Even a brand new Sensor 3 blade is horrible. Maybe the blades are at a steeper angle or something.

They're not making any more off of me since I found an electric that can produce a reasonably close shave. Who knows how expensive replacement blades for it is going to be. I've got a while yet before I have to worry about that though.

Before you shave put a washcloth wet with hot water on your beard for at least a minute then wash it with soap and water to soften it.

i havent shaved at home in the last 6 years.
ive been going to a barber and paying approx $10 per shave which included a steam shave, styling, head and neck massage, facial and all the creams.
im lucky that my facial hair is a slow grower so if i shave on sunday, im good for an office environment till friday.

then i moved to switzerland...
a basic shave costs $22...feeling the pain...

I use a safety razor with DE blades. Best purchase ever. Shave is so smooth and so close, it craps all over any razor Gillette or the like could come up with.
