How long will it take before theese proccessors cannot perform the highest settings in games (assuming there is a decent video card):

AMD Athlon 64:

3400+

3200+

3000+

3500+

That's a real crystal ball question, but they should be good for Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, assuming a fast graphics card (X800 , 6800) and settings. I'd guess those might be good for the next year, or the next round of GPU's and DX 10.

Well you figure that Doom3's recommended specs are 2.4ghz with 512mb of ram... I dont see the gaming community catching up to the 64s any time with in the next few years... the 2.4 was released April 2nd 2002. so right now it has been over 2 years and this is just the recommended specs... the minimum specs for doom3 are 1.2GHz powered PC with 256MB RAM... The 1.2 has been out forever!! that was 2000... So you figure 4 years... I think 2007 is playing it really safe...

keep in mind that most of todays software just barely touches the true power of a 64 bit chip

if you want to play games you'll most likely need to upgrade your video card more than your cpu. you could keep the same mobo and cpu but add in more memory and a better video card later and it would probalby do just fine.

I'm using my AXP 2100+ and GeForce 3 Classic. When i bought these in err.. dont remember if it was 2002 or 2001,, anywho, they can still play most games out today, granted i would be better off upgrading my vid card but it still plays most stuff. I would guess buying a 3800+ would last you at least 3 years. amd if you're upgrading your vid card one would add another 6 months pherhaps.

hmmm i got my 2000+ AXP and 440 GF 4 nearly 3 years ago and i was thinking the same thing, although i got a cheap 5600 Fx 256 MB, im goona look around 2day and see how much a cheap athlon 64 2800+ is.

i get a new pc about every 3 years, although my P233 lasted tilll 2002 from 97, it was used for back up stuff, lagged like it was dying to open paint.

Just to clarify, Confusednewbie1552's question was:

How long will it take before theese proccessors cannot perform the highest settings in games (assuming there is a decent video card):

If that is taken literally, I have a 875P motherboard with w 3.0C P4, 5125 MB of OCZ 3700 memory, and an ATI 9800 Pro video card, and I cannot play FarCry at greater than 1280x1024 without some scenes getting a little sluggish. Based on his question, the 3000+ would just get by with max settings at 1600x1200 for some FarCry scenes using the latest video cards (see review).

The question can only have subjective answers. I have a rig with a 1.53 GHz Athlon XP and a ti 4200 card in it that is still great for most games, it just wouldn't cut it for FarCry and some newer games.

All the processors he listed have a long life ahead of them, just not necessarily playing the latest games with the highest settings. (I'm looking forward to a price drop in the 939 pin cpu's and the new 90nm processors becoming available).

Thanks everyone =).

OK I have a few questions though, is the 3000 similiar in performance to the 3400 or is the 3200 similiar in performance to the 3400? Or do I have to buy the 3400?

the 3200+ is more similar in performance to the 3400+ than the 3000+ is

check it out, man...
good benchies, just dont forget to look at the next few pages
null

as you can see, if you are a gamer and you don't want to drop mucho denero for the 3700/3800, the 3400 is king. it soundly beats the p4 3.2 in most games. if you do want to drop that denero, look at socket 939 for the 3500/3800...price is higher for your performance, but it's the future. You could wait till later this year and the price on those should drop a fair bit and you could get a 90 nm.

the 3000 is your best bet price/performance...it's near the 3200 in those benchmarks, it overclocks pretty well.

keep in mind what the big guy upstairs ^ said

3000<3200<3400 in price and performance
if your looking for the best price to performance ratio 3400<3200<3000 especially if you overclock it any

my advise, now the 3000 plays any game great, three years from now there all going to be out of date

side note:
three years from now processors are going to be crazy look at moore's law, dual core opteron's, the progression from 32 to 64 bit computing, transitioning to smaller production scales (i think intel has 60nm then 45 nm planed for the time frame)....put em all together and i'm thinking for my next upgrade in 3-4 years

The processor of the future:

amd whatever 128 bit, 45nm, quad core, 12 GHz, 4GHz Hypertransport B.A.M.F. Processor
combined with like 4-8 GB DDR 3 or 4 @ about 1000 MHz and an ati radeon elevendy-billion

good rant if i do say so myself
hope you enjoyed
