How long will it take for the PC to overpower the PS3 in terms of graphics?

What games have we seen from ps3 that have not been prerendered, seems like Sony is hiding from something, will it take long for pc graphics to overcome PS3's graphics, will it be done when the Nvidia G80 is released?

i agree. i heard the graphics card is equivalent to a 7600GT...not sure how true it is but i did read a review (for some reason i'm thinking anand wrote the review) and said it looks almost as good as the xbox 360 in an enthusiastic way...bottom line is it's not even as good as the 360

if you paid top dollar (meaning something like $4k or more) you could top the PS3. In about a year mainstream enthusiast (~$2k) will be about as powerful.

I heard that Nvidia said that the RSX is better than a 7800GTX, 24 pipelines @ 550MHZ I think.

Operating Systems are a pretty heavy overhead. There are always things contemporary consoles can do that PCs will struggle with.

At least the 360 kept the cost down to make it viable. Around half the price of a compareable PC (ROUGHLY). PS3.... Eh.

Sony has only said theoritcal performance, I wonder if the system will actually be close to 2 teraflops.

no time. ps3's been delayed and had its spec lowered over and over

pc's have quad sli for @%# sake.

course games to take full advantage is another thing. there are fewer,but once developers have ps3/360 as baseline for cross platform dev, its gonna be good for all. much better than the current dummy it down for ps2/xbox situation

and the ps3 is limited to 256mb vid mem

What can the cpu really do well though? Pretty much just graphics related stuff (and even video cards are doing physics now), so compare it to a sli or crossfire setup.

The ps3 doesn't sound like it will have very impressive graphics at all. Just something similiar to a 7900gt.

It's basically an overclocked 7900gt in the ps3, allowing for the advantages of a console I would say a current 7900gt sli system could probably match a ps3. This is speculation, I obviously don't know for sure, but I've heard developers like carmack say they can basically get double performance with locked down hardware specs. There may not be anything as effectively fast in a single card solution until G80. There will be comparable looking stuff on the pc from day 1, provided you have a very high end pc.

In terms of exceeding the consoles, that's another story. With so much cross-platform I'd expect a lot of PC games that are basically the same as their 360/ps3 counterparts, with very few exceeding them (Crysis comes to mind).
