Just been doing what I've been doing for basically 18 years. Tired and bored with it. I hate it when I'm slow at work, but hate doing the work. Its a lose-lose.

What, and in particular, how much time would it take, for me to become a doctor? I have an undergrad in finance. Would I have to get some other degree with extra sciences to go to med school? How long is med school? And then after med school don't I have to do some fellowship or intern or some crap where you don't make real money for a few years?

And mind you, I'm wicked smart - I breezed through undergrad at the University of Texas in 3 years with a perfect 4.0. No one does that except me. So I certainly wouldn't need "extra time" to get through school. Just trying to figure out what all it takes.

Thanks for any help!

Why are you asking us a question better put to the local medical school registrar ? And you got the wrong group son, we're more likely to be patients than doctors.

It took 12 years for a family friend to start from scratch and become a full fledged GP doctor. He started at a practice last year (and he's also about $280K in debt ).

Well, you already have the God complex down but you've never struck me as intelligent.

My knee surgeon said ""Doctors" are a goofy bunch. All you have to do is memorize about 20,000 things to pass the board and become an MD...it takes a real genius to become a surgeon."

y'know...maybe the OP is just looking for someone to play doctor with him...

since...as referenced in my earlier post....I AM a geenyus...therefore, I don't play doctor, I play surgeon...I always carry a scalpel...

heck, I could do brain surgery with that thing.

2-3 years to get your undergrads in an appropriate field. Actually, probably 3-4 as colleges have vastly different requirements for undergrad credits than they did 18 years ago.
4-6 years of medical school.
1 or more as a resident
This could take longer depending on specialization and course. Also, it's important to remember that when you went to college initially you probably didn't have a wife or kids to worry about and take up your time. Going to medical school is absolutely a full time job, and getting in to medical school usually requires not only stellar GPA in an appropriate major but other extracurricular activities like volunteering at a hospital, etc.

So 7-10 or so. And I think the average debt after medical school nowadays is about $330k.

If you are over 30, forget it, you are too old.

Bullshit. Sorry dude - getting through med school is about persistence and drive, and of course, some brains.

Edit:

2-3 Years on all prerequisites required for med school
4 Years for Med School
1 Year just-in-case you miss a cycle or need time to prepare for MCATS
====================================================
8 Years assuming you go Full Time Study.

To me, that is it. The years are a resident may suck, but at that point you are just paying your dues.

OP, you wouldn't even make a good patient . . . maybe a human medical waste container, though. Just paint yourself red and keep your mouth open for incoming.

You forgot work experience. You can't become a doctor with street creds and certificates, you need 3 years real life experience so around 15+ years realistically HOWEVER if you are Asian you can become a doctor in less than 3 months IMO.

Thanks for all the serious replies - magomago, hardhat, fritz. All the regular trolls showed up as well as is typical. You guys can take a long walk off a short ship.

Cappuccino, what is this "work experience" you are talking about? I thought you have to go to med school, do your residency (sounds like its 1 year), then you can sit to take the exam and once you pass you become a doctor? How can you have doctor work experience when you are not licensed to be a doctor lol?

To you guys who are saying if your over 30, forget it, or your too old, forget it, why would you say that? I'm 42. Sounds like by the time I'm 50 I could be a full-fledged doctor. I like the ability to be able to write my own prescriptions, and write prescriptions for others for $$$. If I'm not in need of cash for the next 8 years (I'm way above you guys' league finance wise), why not do it?

Thanks again to all the series repliers.

Since you aren't "wickedly smart" enough to do a simple google search which would have given you the exact answer you are looking for, I'd say a really freaking long time. Hell I will take 10:1 odds that you don't make it through internship and that's if you even make it through medical school.

Luckily for the rest of us, I don't think the above will ever be a problem.

What a min. Do you want to become a doctor because you want to save lives? therefore you are going to physically perform syurgeroy? If yes 10 years is no chance. Like I said you need 15+ years if you want to own the Hospital. Also, you need certain A levels first so without them who the F is going to accept you? No university is going to accept someone because they previously have x y z. You need specific requirements.

IMO if you are serious about medicine I apply for Pharmacy instead because you mentioned you want to pres people and whatnot. Then again you still need specific certificates. I am not talking about Maths and English I am talking about requirements like A level Science, A level maths etc not sure what is that in the US but from my experience the US university system is different vs the UK. It takes 2 years to get those modules too. Not worth it you are 42 go spend something else. No being mean just telling you th truth. Also medcine is 100000000000% harder than finance. Finance you can google and find the answers and medicine you can't.
