I F***ing love the Sig!

Which ones? My old 6.4Gig 5400rpm sounded like dragging nails across a blackboard when it was seeking....the new ones (Dmax+40 and Dmax+45) are quite quiet...and if they are too loud for you, Maxtor has a utility to select "quiet" mode to drop the noise level even more.

I like your sig too, but I think you will be changing it soon... To answer your question, they are quiet. I don't even hear mine due to fan noise, but I can still hear my ibm.

The new Diamondmax 80 series 5400rpm drives are without a doubt the most quiet drives I've ever encountered. I honestly cannot hear anything out of it - running Scandisk and booting into Windows is almost eerie

My Maxtor Diamond Max+40 is very quiet at idle and hardly noticable when reading/writing...plus the newer drives can be set to run even quieter(DMax+45, +60)

thank you very much for the info. I was looking at those DM+45 they sound like good performers at a good price.

I love my sig too and though of it myself Gonna try to keep it as long as possible...

My DiamondMAX Plus 7200rpm 27.2GB is nearly silent, especially when compared to my Quantum Fireball 5400rpm 10.2GB. I can't hear it over one system fan unless I put my ear next to the front of the machine.

for some reason i can't hear either of the dm +40s i have in the box at my feet, but the box 3 feet away has some weird echo properties for the case and the fact that i've "hidden" it inside a piece of furniture so i can hear that +40 really well.

My 40Gb DiamondMax Plus 7200RPM is very quiet, it makes less noise than my 18Gb Western Digital Expert 7200 RPM.

The Diamond Max 40 I have is also one of the quietest drives I have had. They are super quiet compared to my Quantum Fireball Plus LM, which is louder than my entire system with music playing, the system 4 fans, and a 7200 rpm Seagate Cuda SCSI.

<<my maxtor 7200rpm 13.6gb is loud as fvck!!!>>

Ahh, shaddup, you just ruined the unanimous vote! Those 13Gigers are 3 years old for god's sake! New Maxtors, in my experience are barely half as loud as those old ones.

Pyro:

Get the DiamondMax Plus 60, its currently the best 20Gig platter 7200rpm hard drive, very quiet, runs cool, and with blazing speeds.

My Maxtor DiamondMax40 20GB 7200RPM (52049H4) is very quiet. I usually can't make the sound of it seeking, and I only have 2 fans in my machine. It's much quieter than the Quantum Fireball LM 20GB I have at work.

My DiamondMax 30 GB 7200rpm is whisper quiet. If you're anal about noise, buy this drive.

mine is basically silent. Between the foam and the PS fan, I cannot hear the hd.

My 30GB Maxtor 5400 is silent enough not to notice with 21db case fans, my IBM 45GB 75GXP 7200 on the other hand does make a considerable noise when seeking, also if I put my ear close up to the IBM drive it appears to be making a quiet but high pitched hissing sound???
