the newest raptor that uses FLUID DYNAMIC BEaring motors are extrememly quiet. SO make sure you get those, older Raptor that uses Ball bearing motor are noisy. In fact most WD HDs are very noisy from my experience..

and no, SCSI drives are not noisy, my seagate Cheetah 15.3K HD is quieter than many 7200RPM IDE drives...so to clear up the misconception

how do I know the newer ones ??

SCSI not loud ? maybe the newest ones, but most older 10k models are as loud as they get, I have 3 right now right here and they are actually the reason I decided to write this post

Thanks

search "raptor" for more noise opinions. The new raptors are currently only the 74 GB model, not the 36 GB

Mine don't make a high pitched noise at all.
They're no louder than my 7200rpm drives

My 36.7 GB Raptors are noisier than my older IDE drives when writing, but not as noisy as my case fans. They have a lower pitch noise than my other drives.

I have a 36GB drive dated Jul 2003 and I think its a tad quiter than my 120gb WD. No idea what this high pitched noise is people talk about.

Actually the benchmark shows the Raptor at 36.7dec , it's actually quieter than my 2 WD 1200JB drives which benchmark around 40 dec.

My new 74gb has no high pitch whine whatsoever. With the case open it emits muted seek noise, but it's not even as loud as my Barracuda V 120gb 8mb cache models - those have a sharper seek crunch to them.

What amazes me is how cool the thing runs... loaded WinXP onto it and played around for a while loading stuff up, and when I was done the thing wasn't even really warm.

I have heard the people that hear the high pitched noise do not have adequate cooling for the drive and it is significantly improved when cooling is added.

my scsi disks didnt run for more than 10minutes, they would have the high pitch from start

No I wasn't directing that toward you I was just mentioning it is a common problem people seem to complain about for the raptor drives.
I have 2 older 10K Atlas SCSI's that are both EXTREMELY loud.

of the 2 ive ever seen/heard, both were as quiet as my Maxtor +9s, or maybe a tad louder, but not like my IBMs

My 74 GB raptor is loud when writing, but very quiet while idle. My 120 GB WD drive is super quiet on both fronts. In fact, I can't ever even hear it writing unless I put my ear right up to the case.

My 36GB Raptor is whisper quiet at idle and not much louder when writing.
