Everwhere says this FOP38 is "LOUD" Is there anything I can compare it with? Is it louder than case fans? How far away can I be away from an open case without hearing it? Is there anything I can compare it to?

It's just that I got a nice set of speakers and I don't want it to ruin the music (sorry, I am not into heavy metal.. in which case i don't need to know) If anybody uses this.. please let me know how it performs

I had it for a time and then sold it. It is just loud. Period. If you're playing music, it would have to be fairly loud in volume to drown out the fan; Let's put it this way. there is no way someone could, literally, doze off in the same space as the FOP. It has a high pitched whine which will reach your ears through whatever you're listening to unless the volume is cranked. I would not recommend it, unless all you care about is quake and fragging; any other activity will be distracted by this powerful but audible monster. check out the monster @ fan from OCZ store - I got that instead and it is just as good if not a little better and has half the noise. hard to find reviews or users though. hidden gem. in any case, pass on the FOP.

The FOP38 is loud. If you are concerned about case noise at all, stay away from it. It sounds like you should go for the FOP32-1. It has the same heatsink as the the FOP38, but a slower, more quiet fan. The difference in performance is 3-5C. Oh, it's cheaper too

FOP 38 is incredibly loud. You hear the stories, but you don't really think that a little fan inside your PC could really be that noisey.

I currently have a FOP32-1 in my box and the volume is pretty cool, certainly not disturbing at all, and I sleep only a few feet from my PC with no difficulty. I'd avoid the FOP38 unless you're deaf or something.

I don't find the fop38 to be that loud. Actually I have gotten used to it. Granted if the only thing on in my room is my comp then you can hear it. But if my comp is on and I have the t.v. you can't hear the thing at all. Maybe it's because I keep my case cover on who knows. But I don't find it that overbearing.

I can stand the noise but my girlfriend can't.
So today I will build a 60 to 80 mm Adapter
out of a cd case and put a quiter 80 mm fan
on the heatsink (with same power!).

how to make a fandapter

I dug up a link posted here a little while ago, that let's you hear the different popular HS/fan combos. The volume is probably all relative but at least you can take note of the pitch (the FO38 does sound annoying... my FOP32 is okay).

Hey MagnificentFist I play Quake and care about that but also want a quiet case so I can tell the dierction of enemies hiding round a corner. RocketAena demands a quiet system!!!

Well, I bought the PAl6035 with a delta. I can't really hear it over the noise of my other fans. And I can sleep in the room with my computer cracking away at night. Also, if I face the blowholes toward the wall, all I can hear is a soothing whirring noise.

i agree with spooon, but the fop38 is different

I have a alpha with delta fan on it, and the noise level is tolerable...but that is because on alpha you have the fan set to suck, so the air doesn't collide with anything really

I also had an fop38 tho...and on that you have the fan set to blow....that's what makes that intolerable whining - the strong air blowing against the heatsink...

If fan noise is a concern this is NOT the device for you. Some people don?t mind the noise-but it is very loud. Normally I leave my case open and the noise from that doesn?t bother me at all. However when I had this cooling device in my pc, I closed my case and moved it as far away from me as possible. It still bugged me.

I have a FOP-38 with that 6800 RPM fan with my case open and I sleep in the same roo. Yes, it's pretty damn noisy, but.. It's not -that- bad..

I heard that the average 30dba that a 'case' fan creates.. is enought to damage your hearing.. of course, in a constant sort of exposure.. which i'm sure we're all under. So beware..

Fop-38's are loud but the only thing that makes everyone hate em is that they are hight pitched. They sound like hair dryers...

I have the FOP-38 and I am contiplating changing the fan change trick I saw on one of the Overclocking websites, I can't remember which one, but what they did was to get a 80mm fan guard and mounted it upside down on top of the Fop-38 heatsink, then they mounted the 80mm Sunon(KD1208PTB1-6
) to the grill guard upside down using screws from the bottom, the fan spins @3200 rpm and makes 36.5 db, which is about 10 db less then the Fop-38 fan, but moves more air(42.5 cfm). They say it works very well.

im pretty sure u can do that to any heatsink... just stick on the fan grill, screw that to where the 60mm fan would screw into, then screw the 80mm fan to the 80mm grill

Sounds like a plan to me.

Does anybody know the exact site? I'd like to see how their mod compared to the 7k fan. Thanks!

I've got 9-10 case fans in my supermicro full tower case and can clearly hear the 38's whine over everything else.
