What response? What specific actions can be taken to control the spread of the virus? Quarantine is the only option, and it appears we've missed that boat.
We do this with the flu every year.
he's already trying to pin it on democrats.

When you get sick please follow this line of logic, stay home, do nothing.

At least encourage people to get tested and provide free testing, treatment, and paid medical leave for quarantine. The government should be paying for all of it. Also, stop suing to end Obamacare and make tens of millions uninsured again in the middle of a pandemic. Is that too much to ask? Who wants to get tested and diagnosed with coronavirus if insurers will be able to deny you insurance based on that next year?
And yet despite all of those things, all it takes for one person in a crappy dead end job to show up at work as a carrier due to job security concerns, or for it to hit any of the many homeless encampments.

And yesterday in SC at a rally Trump declared that the coronavirus is just a hoax, and I am sure the knuckle dragging simians in attendance ate it up.

As opposed to what? Run in circles with my hands in the air?
We have a virus that's spreading across the world, we have no cure, and we won't take the only actions that would prevent the spread. We go through this every year, millions die, no one cares.

I'm sure this will be great for the markets. Investors love an obviously lying president during a time of potential crisis, right?

It's a game of numbers. Because there is an exponential component to the growth, reducing transmission rate even a bit has a huge effect. It's like changing the base in an exponent.

Which is a demonstrable lie. We don't have a coronavirus every year, so you're referring to influenza. There is plenty of time, money, and other resources dedicated to prevention and treatment. You're statement is born of ignorance, as usual.

Not sure how that relates to my post (which was, for the record, a weak joke about so many of the candidates being in the most vulnerable age-group).
I got the joke, gave it the laugh reaction...

Had a fantasy, the POTUS is not immune from infection and it would be interesting to see Trump come down with this. He's not the smartest card in the deck.

It’s $2,500 to get in the door and $5,000 to take a picture with the vice president, according to an invite obtained by the Tampa Bay Times. And $25,000 buys dinner with him, too.

Our coronavirus Czar hard at work. A deadly virus hits the globe, but the only information citizens get from vital scientists must be cleared through a religious fanatic that believes smoking doesn't cause cancer, dinosaurs never existed and plagues are sent by God.

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition from Monty Python = No one expected (well not enough) that a virus like this would emerge and likely be a very serious issue.
I didn't "expect" ... I'm no expert, but not stupid and I have wondered for years if we are in for something like this. The bird flu, ebola, H1N1, the mutability of viruses, the almost exponential type increase in travel on the planet. It adds up to the potential for what? THIS. OR WORSE. At the very best, this IS a wake up call we better hear. This is going to be a strange year.

It's simply too early to have an accurate (and maybe more appropriately generalizable) CFR. Even in China the CFR within Hubei is currently estimated at 2.9% and outside of Hubei at 0.4%.

But to answer the OP, I have significant fears about Trump's ability to manage his way out of a wet paper bag.

Yeh, but he's been able to lie his way out of everything his whole life.

This topic is quite a lie.

We are dealing with a virus, a global pandemic. It will burn its way through the population and that is it.

The President, our government, our actions... they have nothing to do with the outcome here. Because we cannot change the outcome.

That's not exactly true. There's a number of things that have been pointed out that could alter the outcome.

This particular virus has been reported on for months. We made no effort to even bother being concerned. And now that it's here the only concern is controlling the narrative and propping up the stock market in a typical state run capitalism move

So, if 1/3 the population contracts the virus & 1% die, that's 1.1M Americans. It's pure conjecture at his point. We won't know any of that for sure until this pandemic plays out, which it obviously will. It's entirely too contagious to be contained. The best we can do is to try to slow it down & reduce the number of active cases so that the healthcare system won't be overwhelmed.

That’s not correct. By halting the flow of information, lying about its severity and draining resources or failing to make resources available there is plenty this administration can do and is doing that can have a dramatic affect on the impact of this virus.

Or nursing homes, day care centers, church congregations, sporting events, concerts, political rallies & you name it.

So... the Spanish flu could be no more serious than the common cold too. Or it could kill you in 3 days. That's how many flu viruses work, and oddly enough, largely dependant on how human societies react to the infection. Downplaying the risk might be a smart political strategy, but it doesn't make the risk go away. It increases it. So I'm more inclined to listen to and take the advice of the medical professionals without the glaringly obvious political conflict of interest.

I would recommend that you research how human behavior can affect the severity of the flu. As the virus mutates rapidly, our behavior can self-select for it, and so how we contain it, or don't contain it, can potentially change a mild strain to lethal one, or vice versa, in a matter of days. Which means, we absolutely can affect the outcome. The biggest problem IMO is convincing people when we did.
