How many are getting an Apple watch?

I'm just wondering how many will hop on this train. I hate the flame wars, I've owned all the phones android, apple, windows. All have done what they should do. Now I just buy the best bang for the buck usually 1 year old or if my carrier or work offers me some great deal I'll buy a new phone.

Maybe when I was single I'd jump on every new gadget but to me the price premium is too much but I'm now living a much more simple life and everything goes to 401k, IRA, savings, stocks. I actually love Apple as I own their stock just not their products.

Same here.. and needing an iPhone to go with it almost makes it a guarantee I won't ever get an Apple Watch if I ever do want to make a jump for a smart watch.

Excluding the base watch, I don't get spending over $500 on a device where the battery will degrade after a year and where technology improvements are still steep.

The $350 price point? Sure - just to play around with as a toy. But the higher price points when next year's version is going to be probably substantially more powerful? I'd still wait another year for the major learnings to be baked into the next revision.

As far as smart watches go, it certainly looks to be towards the top of the barrel, but I have no interest in the product category. Having a cellphone made the main selling point of having a watch rather pointless years ago and I don't need a fitness tracker either.

Perhaps I'll jump in a few years down the road when the platform has matured a little, but I suspect that much like the original iPhone that the next two - three years will see a lot of advancements in the product category that will outshine the first generation products.

I'm actually starting to lose faith in Android Wear as well. I may ended up supporting third party smartwatch OS that will connect (and not highly depended on) a certain phone OS. Or I'll just stay watchless like I've been the past 10 years or so.

I really hope people do and it is a hit. I like my Android Wear and I want the segment/form factor to succeed. Apple's Watch is the key, it better sell millions.

Personally I would never buy a gen 1 Apple product ever again, I have been burned too often. But I will recommend it once the smartwatch exists to normal people.

I have to agree that they are disconnected with the target market but strongly disagree with your last statement.

There is no possible situation where it is acceptable during a work meeting / class / meal / driving a car / social event to dig into your pocket, look at your crotch, smile, then dig into your pocket again and resume whatever you were doing before your leg vibrated. The phone experience will NEVER truely work socially. It is always a strong disturbance to you and those around you.

The only real solution is to make the interaction seamless, such as with a wearable. A 5 inch or 6 inch screen just is always going to be a social disturbance. And with an aging population (needs larger text) wanting more and more utility (needs more content per screen), we aren't going back to 4 inch screens. And we ceratainly aren't going to phones with the 3 inch or less screens that would be needed to make emails, texts, notifications, etc. seamless.

The problem though is with smartwatches requiring phones. Now you need a $500 watch AND a $500 phone. You need to carry two chargers around with you (unless Apple makes their next iPhone charge with a magnet too). You need to carry two bulky devices to the gym or while running that half-marathon discussed by Apple. Requiring the phone pretty much destroys the utility of the smartwatch. The negatives now outweigh the positives.

Give me a smartwatch with just enough brains to display notifications, and just enough battery life to turn on wi-fi once a minute for a brief moment to get new notifications. That is it. Nothing else. That would be a killer smartwatch. One item to carry with you. One item to charge. One quick glance to your wrist will let you know that your next meeting has been moved and no one else will be disturbed by you getting this notification. Email, texts, meeting updates, heart rate monitoring, etc, all just a quick socially-acceptable glance away.

Keep looking at your phone in a meeting and you're going to get some pointed questions asking if you have somewhere more important to be.

Ugh just saw that 18 hour life. I used the original Gear watch from Samsung which could get through 1 day, but not 2, meaning you had to charge it every night. When people say it's just like charging your phone, it's not really true. I forgot to charge the watch at least a couple times a week and not having the special charging cable at work (good way to sell another expensive cable) exacerbated the issue.

If you forgot to charge your phone, odds are there are many places you can charge it, especially at work.

2 solid days IMO is the bare minimum since it means you should charge it nightly, but if you forget, you're not carrying around a dead weight. I'm still using the Gear Fit mostly b/c it's comfortable vs the bigger watches and it gives me a solid 3 days per charge.

I saw some clips of Tim Cook talking about the Apple Watch just a little while ago. Totally uninspiring.

Apple Watch seems as lame as ever, or possibly more so.

BTW, the $10000 watch is $13000 in Canada.
