NOT including credit card accounts and investments, how many bank accounts do you have an what type? I'm just talking chequing and savings accounts, not term investments and such.

I just opened one yesterday to save away some money for future toys and things. So that makes 3 one chequing, 2 savings.

4+

1. Checking for bills
2. Checking for me
3. checking for wife
4. checking for expenses (other than bills)
5. Savings online account

Opened a couple of them recently, over the holidays, and got like $200 in deposits for opening them. There are lots of offers where banks pay you to open accounts. See FWF for details. I don't think there's any harm in opening a bunch of checking accounts, except maybe a small credit score hit for ones that do a credit check on you...

Is there any disadvantage to have a lot of accounts? Well besides the fact that you either have to pay for a monthly plan or pay per transaction for each account. Like credit rating wise?

AFAIK, it does not effect your credit having a decent amount of checkings/savings accounts...It helps if they are older if I recall, and in good standing.

I've got about 13, business/personal/joint accounts.

Other than having your money spread out(both good and sometimes annoying), nope.

Two.

Wells Fargo has one of the best online checking systems that I've used so we've stuck with that for years even though there isn't a local branch within 30 miles of me.

I've also got one at a local credit union because their loan rates are dirt cheap. And we use that as a convenient place to cash checks and fun money savings accounts.

1 Checking and 1 Savings for me. I've never seen the need for more than that.

I know people that have "emergency" accounts, "vacation" accounts, etc. That just never made sense to me. If I want to save money for a vacation, why not just do it in one of the accounts I already have?

FDIC only insures the first $250,000 in an account...

By doing it that way it makes it easier for some to truly separate their money for other things. Some people just have a difficult time saving unless it's being done with clearly set out goals. Bit easier to say 'nope, that account is only for emergencies' than 'yeah, I got enough in here, why not?' etc.
