In the age of planned obsolescence you're supposed to throw old crap away.

Two...
One desktop system and a laptop.

Don't see why you'd need more if you live alone...how do you use more than one computer at once? One mouse in your left hand and another in your right, each eye focused on a different screen? Or half a dozen remote desktop windows open at once?

I suppose it could probably be useful to have some low-power server that shares files, printer etc., but it seems kind of overkill at home.

At this moment I am sitting in my home office. I have my Office PC, personal laptop, 3 old P4 systems in my closet, and 7 laptops from a small company I do consulting for.

My son has a computer in his room across the wall, there is a HTPC in the family room, 2 servers under the stairs, and one computer in the garage.

So 17 computers right now, but 7 aren't mine.

Throw some of that shit away. I stopped being a packrat with useless hardware and I couldn't be happier.

1. main/gaming rig
2. old pentium 4 next to the work bench. I stream video content to it to watch while working.
3. HTPC hooked up in the bedroom to the plasma.
4. HTPC in the "star trek" room (3rd bedroom). This is where I hang all my completed models from the ceiling and watch sci-fi shows Yes total nerd, don't care.
5. HTPC I just put together for my wife who is getting ready to have spine surgery and will be relegated to the 2nd bedroom (hospital bed) and wants to watch all of her tv shows that are saved on the server.
6. Wife's laptop.

I also have another computer that runs but is not set up at the moment. I was using it to stream tv to another part of my basement.

I have a main computer in the family room, a desktop in my bedroom, and my daughter has a desktop in her room. We also both have netbooks. As soon as I get the money for parts I'm going to build a server for backup, and media shares.

Yeah, if you have a family, it's a different thing. They'll want a computer each, and then they might want to access the same music and movies and print on the same printer, creating the need for a file/print server.

But more than one desktop system per person just seems silly. A laptop is portable, so you don't need a "bedroom pc", "kitchen pc", "bathroom pc" etc... Just slam the notebook shut, grab it and take it with you from room to room

I was doing that for awhile, but I've been folding on my computers to generate heat. The netbook doesn't put out enough heat, and I don't want to run it hard due the generally delicate nature.

The P4 systems are going to be donated to a daycare or put on Craigslist. The garage PC is for listening to music or surfing while I'm working in the garage. The work laptops I really can't get rid of.

Outside of that, everything is running 45nm dual core AMD or Intel CPUs with 4GB of RAM or more. Not exactly garbage.

Running computers, or computers in general? I'll assume running.

My main laptop
Basement laptop
Garage laptop
Fiancee's laptop
Fiancee's 2nd laptop
Extra laptop

I've pretty much done away with the desktop.

I'm guessing here, but I'd say around 20. Nine that are mine and another 11 for sale.

4 or 5 laptops
2 desktops
1 HTPC
1 server
A closet full of broken computers (probably could amount to 354315103361430131386403 computers)
I told bob for each computer he brings home from work, from now on, he has to get rid of one computer stored.
Our house looks pretty much like an IT call center.
