for years, I only had one... I was a bit stupid about it in my teens/early 20's. if I got a credit card offer with better rewards/lower interest, I'd get the new one and cancel the old, because that made sense in my head.

I still don't really go crazy (unlike, say, my mom, who's got a different store credit card for every store in the state), but I'm up to 3 now (not counting my debit card, which I only use for withdrawing cash at ATM's).

Amazon Visa -- 99% of my purchases are with this card. usually save up the points and use them for all my Christmas shopping every December

United Airlines card -- it's got a yearly free, but as long as I travel twice, the free checked bags pay more than offset the cost of the card. plus there's no fee for international spending, so this is the card that I'll use while on vacation

Costco Amex -- hate that Costco only takes American Express... I wouldn't have the card otherwise. but between my BF and I, we host a lot of parties, so I need to make the occasional trip to Costco.

Costco Amex
Amazon Visa
Discover
USAA Platinum Visa

I never really use the latter two, but keep them because the accounts are old and good for the average life of my credit accounts. Not sure what my total limits are - probably something like $80-100K? I think they're each around $20-25K.

Five. One for everyday expenses (Amazon), one for recurring monthly payments (so I don't have to change it when my everyday card number gets stolen/changed every few years), one for Costco (Amex), one that was 0% for some home projects, and one that I've had since 18.

I really don't understand people who use their debit cards in stores. It's so much more of a hassle when your card gets stolen and funds get withdrawn. Debit should only be used at the ATM.

Two.

Discover IT - for cashback
Credit Union Visa - for usability everywhere and very low APR (~9%) in the emergency case I ever need to risk running a balance (I have not had to yet).

2 and like Don said, looks good on the credit. What is now a B.O.A. card, had since 1988. Need to remember to use it more often so they don't cancel it.

Credit Karma tells me I don't have enough lines of credit open. That, and my average credit age isn't long enough. Well, I have enough, and the age is long enough to get a good score, but if I could somehow backdate 5 more credit cards to 10 years ago, I'm told my score would improve.

Hrm, I got a notice of inactivity from chase for a credit card I haven't touched in a couple years. I should probably buy something on it.

5 more??? You have to be in the game to play the game but that sounds ridiculous.

For a small fee, I'll put you on as an authorized user. What's your SSN?

I got into a big discussion with a friend about that, who only has a debit card and swears that credit cards are a product of Satan.

what it basically came down to was that he doesn't have the self-control to limit his spending on a credit card.

More than 1 and less than 10. All of them are either cash back or points. I don't do regular CC without anything back and I always paid in full before due date, never been late.

The three that I use the most:

Chase Freedom Visa Signature - 5% cash back categories are nice.
American Express Platinum - Member Rewards points for sale => cold hard cash for me, just received over $1400 last week.
Bank of America Visa Signature - 2% cash back on groceries, 3% on gas, 1% for everything else plus love their virtual one time use credit card number for "iffy" websites online.

Is the Amazon card really that good for everybody? I've got 3 but I only use my BOA Worldpoints Visa and never carry a balance, just building the points...can't say they make me terribly happy so I would consider changing

it's 419-41-3440

full name is jaedaliu. But that won't really help me as it's still your credit I'm drawing on.

I'm sending the check to Nigeria, that's how these things work, right?

I like it.

but I also pretty much buy everything except groceries, gas, and clothes via Amazon, so the rewards add up.

One. I had a second that I never used because they wouldn't lower the interest rate, and I eventually canceled it after my ex's daughter made an unauthorized charge on it (and also likely took the replacement card that got mailed to the house).

So now I just have my debit card and a single cc card.

Currently open? 10, 5 of which were opened last year. My wife has another 9 (We only share a single card). Of those 10 I'll close 8 of them this year after transferring the credit limit and open 6-8 new ones.

I only have two I use reguarly and the others are just used to meet the promotions minimum spend

It's a trap!

That's the one I use for the bulk of my spending. Extra 50% rewards when deposited into a BofA or Merrill Lynch account.

I don't care about rewards, but my Wells Fargo card has a 4.75% permanent interest rate.
Rewards are all that matters, never carry a balance and the interest rate could be 1000% for all I care

I'll have to look into it, only getting a flat 1% on my BOA card and I do a lot of Amazon shopping...might just be worth it

I've got 3. I use them for the rewards, and I never carry a balance.

Starwood AMEX is my main card.
Southwest Airlines Chase Visa for any place that doesn't accept AMEX.

Also have a Capital One cashback card, but hardly ever use it.
