for years i was in the camp of "credit cards are evil!" until i needed a personal loan from my bank. the lack of one hurts..

now i have 2. i pay them off every month though

some capital one card (basic one) i use this one nearly for everything.
discover card that i hate.

Also have sams club credit.

I been told 2 is really not optimal and i should get 1-2 more.

Amazon Visa -- 99% of my purchases are with this card. usually save up the points and use them for all my Christmas shopping every December

Isn't this a great deal? I do the same and its awesome to get about $300 a year free money to buy stuff at Amazon from it. I pay it off in full each month so its all gravy.

I have two, my first CC at RBC, and my newer one from the credit union I switched to. Was going to cancel the RBC one but I heard that is bad for credit, so I just keep it but don't really use it.

I also have a credit line. I never use the credit card for long term, if I'm in a situation where I can't actually pay it off, I still pay it off, but with the credit line. Rather keep a balance on that than a credit card.

I don't care about rewards, but my Wells Fargo card has a 4.75% permanent interest rate.

You logic is not sound.

Where do you get a 4.75% return for sure of your money? Money market account? CD? Savings? Nope.

Pay off your CC debt so you won't have to pay interest = guarantee money.

I currently have four credit cards with an additional as an AU. I'm contemplating on whether to get five more cards or not. The more cards you have, the better your credit score in the long run.

North of ten counting store cards. Mainly only use Amex BCP, Discover and my credit union card. Do use Amazon and Lowes for 0% deals.

I have 4: USAA Platinum, Discover, Capital One (first CC and I never use it), and a BestBuy Rewards card (which I also never use).

I basically use my USAA card for everything. The Discover is for large purchases I don't mind paying down (which is rare).

I think there's a $600 balance on it right now. (I'd previously run the balance up to $17K, but paid it off specifically to avoid paying interest over the next 10 months or so.)

7, mostly for the sign up bonuses. Use the Freedom card mainly, unless another card gives me more cb for a certain thing.

BofA Power Rewards - 1st CC
Cap One Platinum
Chase Freedom - $200
BofA Cash Rewards - $275
Chase Amazon - $30
Chase Southwest Premier - 50k points
Chase Southwest Plus - 50k points

And a Macy's card I used once for 10% off 1st purchase or some shit.

Once I get a house, I plan to open a card every 3 months or so, and cancel others so I'm eligible again in 1-2 years. Too much free money to pass up. Earn way more than 1-5% cb.

Two, but all I ever really use is the debit card.

- credit union debit card (MasterCard)
- American Express Optima Platinum

for years, I only had one... I was a bit stupid about it in my teens/early 20's. if I got a credit card offer with better rewards/lower interest, I'd get the new one and cancel the old, because that made sense in my head.

I still don't really go crazy (unlike, say, my mom, who's got a different store credit card for every store in the state), but I'm up to 3 now (not counting my debit card, which I only use for withdrawing cash at ATM's).

Amazon Visa -- 99% of my purchases are with this card. usually save up the points and use them for all my Christmas shopping every December

United Airlines card -- it's got a yearly free, but as long as I travel twice, the free checked bags pay more than offset the cost of the card. plus there's no fee for international spending, so this is the card that I'll use while on vacation

Costco Amex -- hate that Costco only takes American Express... I wouldn't have the card otherwise. but between my BF and I, we host a lot of parties, so I need to make the occasional trip to Costco.

Why is this not a poll?

funny, turns out I've actually got 4 credit cards.

my oldest is a store card from a store that I've never actually shopped at. but one night in college, my friends were shopping there and the clerk was telling us how she was in danger of getting fired if she didn't sign up enough people for the store card by the end of the month. feeling bad, the 4 of us all signed up for the store credit card.

I assumed they would have closed the account for non-use, but there it is, sitting on my credit score. Credit Karma is actually telling me that my credit store would go down if I were to close it.

my overall credit score is still good, but it looks like the average age of my cards took a big hit in the past couple months since I opened up 2 new cards (costco and united)

That seems to always be the case. It looks like if you didn't open a credit card account in like 1995, your average age of cards is bad... My youngest is like 3 years and I still don't have a good "rating" on the history length.

Actually, I take that back. The BestBuy card I have was recently bought buy Citi, so it is like a month old.

Ehh, I have 3, I use 1 regularly, then I have 1 "backup" with another bank, and then 1 that I use only for some online bills/payments.

I am tempted to get rid of the 3rd card to replace it with a Costco credit account, since the bank where I have my checking account likes to shut down their network sometimes when I am at Costco, and I dunno about you, but, I do not typically carry $500 cash on me.

2. The one I actually use is through my bank with cashback and all that. Then I also have an Amex with a higher limit for emergencies/backup.

Did you end up getting the CP?

Yep. Scared the shit out of me too because I forgot about it for couple months after becoming eligible. Now that it's 2014 it says I need 110k points to qualify, but if I go into my account I can still activate it, good through 2014. Probably won't use it until the summer.
