I'm just curious as to how many currently enrolled CSU (California) students there are on here. After everything that's gone down this summer (two tuition raises, capping max units at 16, all campus faculty/staff taking 10% cuts, furloughs, etc.) I'm wondering if people are pissed at other campuses. I was told by a well-respected professor within my department that the CSU administration might have given themselves a 10% raise despite everything that's going on, still waiting on that to be confirmed.

Edit: Sorry about that. California. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in my own little world I forget there are other states.

umm where are you reading this supposed 16 unit cap? The changed I've heard through friends is that lowered any units is Academic renewal units. It used to be 18. I graduated a years ago so I'm not sure when that took place. Fees of course go up they always do.

I looked it up, at least for sjsu it was changed this past summer.

That's bullshit. If my school (not in california, even though I live in CA) caps at 16 units, I'm finding another school. If I want to take 18, that should be my prerogative and not some asshole administrators.

i go to Cal Poly Pomona and they canceled their 10 week summer classes because of budget cuts. I just hoping my financial aid will get increased because of the tuition raises.

It's probably because of budget cuts not because some administrator doesn't want you taking six classes.

I know a few people who've gotten pushed back one semester from graduation because of these caps and/or classes not being offered.

I just finished my ms this summer at csu east bay. what i don't understand is why are they expanding the campus; a new administration building, a new gym, finishing up a new economics center and within the past few years, tore down an entire parking lot to put in new dormitories as well as a cafeteria. i saw parking go from 20/quarter to 60/quarter, and daily parking from 1.5 to 5! on top of this, salary cuts and furloughs?

while the csu system is known for having great teachers, small class sizes, affordable, these cuts are putting a strain on faculty which eventually trickles down to the students. i can't even get ahold of my adviser to get a rec letter cause she's so now working twice as hard for less pay.

and to top things off...all the executives have gotten raises? what, to keep them salaries competitive so they won't leave for the private sector? come on, you make the decision to work for a school, expect to get paid less then working private. the rewards are knowing that you've made an impact on thousands of students.

anywho, glad i'm done with that place. i never got my rec letter, i ended having to use old rec letters from my letter fowarding service.

oh, one of our graduate departments lost their accreditation last year because teachers weren't available enough to students.

You're welcome to go somewhere else and pay 3-15 times as much. CSU (actually all the California public schools) are very under priced compared to their quality.

Max of 16 credits? Ouch. We had a soft ceiling of 18, and could simply get a petition form from our academic adviser to go above that. As long as you were in good standing it was easy to get above 18. I had a few 20-22 credit semesters; depending on what you're taking, it's really not all that bad.

I got bored during lunch and looked into this. I have not found anything that lists a semester max of 16 units.

only things I found is that at sjsu they've lowered atleast what is used to be of 18 units to 16 units max for academic renewal.

CSU long beach lists you're allowed to enroll up to 16 units during open enrollment. After a certain date you can enroll up to 18 without a petition. I'm guess this policy is to allow as many people as possible to get in at least 12 units. Some people like me packed in 18 units almost every semester it limits spaces for those such as freshmen unable to get up to the full time minimum of 12 units.

Same goes with Sonoma state. 16 units during 1st registration period. after that up to 20.

Not sure where you got the 16 unit cap from. My school says limit 16 now and up to 19 a few days after final drop date in mid-September meaning one can add more classes provided there is sufficient space.

Compared to last semester the effective fee increase is about 25%, however, I still think that CSU is an excellent value compared to some of the private schools I've attended. I previously attended National University in Southern California and that costs more than $1200 per class. I am still attending CSU but I worked for several years before transferring to CSU so that I would have some savings and my bases covered while I attended CSU. The increase in tuition sucks, but what's worse for me is that they have fewer class offerings. The monetary portion I don't care so much about. I just want to graduate at this point.

People are getting laid off and spending less means less tax revenue. On top of that, the increase in the number of people collecting unemployment means that more people are drawing from a smaller pot. Last I heard, California has a $27b budget shortfall which is about 1/4 their general fund; they only have 3/4 of what is needed to operate normally. So somewhere they have to make some cuts even if it does hurt some people.
