I’m definitely old enough...but thankfully never had to eat that shit.

FWIF, aspics are considered “classy” in French cuisine... uke:

My grandma used to serve deviled eggs submerged in lime and lemon jello.

never like that...wtf is wrong with america?
An obsession with modernism.

Fortunately, my parents and grandparents were not like that, so my culinary experience doesn't include a lot of jello molds.

My dad's family was a canned-soup-and-bologna-sandwich bunch (grandmom is a decent baker, but was always a working mother.) My mothers family were fiercely Italian and wanted nothing to do with that bullshit.

The bacon wrapped bananas sound interesting.

Lately I've been wondering where Mom got a few of the recipes that she prepared regularly. A favorite of mine was her slumgullion. There are a million versions of slumgullion, most of them stews. Hers was a casserole with layered ground beef, potatoes, onions, green peppers and peas in a light tomato sauce. The sauce, if I recall, was from Campbell's condensed tomato soup. My guess is that it was a recipe cut out of a magazine from the 1960s.

Don't discount the recipes on the backs of the packages. They have test kitchens and stuff.

Nothign wrong with aspic. The ones my mother in law makes are meat aspics. Its a big thing back in the old country and she has made it since she learned how to cook.

You make a chicken soup for instance and add a thickener to the hot soup. Refrigerate and it sets up solid in the cold fridge. Imagine jello but flavored with meat/broth instead of strawberry, orange etc... Actually, its so meaty that our cats like to eat it too. If you can eat soup, you can eat aspic

gelatin desserts are nasty. I wouldn't eat that when I was a kid and I won't eat it now.

I have cook books from the 1950's and 60's and they are a wealth of cooking information.

I have the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook from 1953 as well as their Meat Cookbook and Casserole Cookbook. There are some great recipes in there including how to make flaky pie crusts.

Even modern aspic looks terrible. I would never be able to get past the feel of the gelatin when chewing something like chicken. The Jell-O with fruit at school wasn't that bad, I guess, as long as the fruit was nice and hard.

It's one thing to make your kids eat it, but how could parents even stomach some of that food?

I'm old enough, but we never had that growing up(thank christ!). It's a symptom of people wanting to force the world to their will with overstylized, unnaturally shaped food. That's the home version of realigning rivers, and carving heads into mountain tops. aka the bad old days.
