The definition of a byte is 8 bits. Those who divide by 10 are lazy.

You get a good guess by dividing by 10 (100/10=10 MB/sec), but the actual is divide by 8 to get: 100/8= 12.5 MB/sec. The only way to tell the difference between 10MB/sec and 12.5MB/sec is by benchmarking or when transferring large files.

The dividing by 10 method is what I would term as RadCon math, you get a good idea and is close enough for what you need.

Its not exactly 8, it really depends on the network protocol. There are many layers (protocol info, data protection like CRC, etc....) for the packets of data. Couldn't tell you the exact size of layers versus the data they carry though.

True, some has stop and start bits. So you can't exactly say people are lazy.

thats overhead. if you have 2 bits of overhead for 8 bits of data you'd see 10MBps but the hardware would still be 12.5MBps.

Yeah, hardware speed would be 12.5MBps (ideal), and this is the hardware forum

Theoretically, 12.5MB/sec

Physically, you'll see anywhere between about 7 and 10MB/sec

Yes, but we don't know he or she is asking about network throughput... Of course, that's what I assumed as well.
