I'm off to New York City next winter to become a student of School of Visual Arts. I'm going for a design/advertising degree, and I've been accepted to this institution, Parsons, and Rhode Island Institute of Design. For those that don't know, they're your MIT-grade schools of design. Sadly, with Parsons and RIT being towards 40k+ a year I just couldn't afford it even with loans and scholarships. SVA is (from what I heard from my friends that live in NYC) still one of those prestigious schools but it's not as much.

So now I'm basically asking how many here was put in that same position where you tried really hard for a college but for some reason, couldn't end up going for whatever reason?

What are you wanting to major in? The thing about schools like MIT and Harvard is that you should be able to make enough money to pay off the loans afterwards. I wouldn't have so much confidence in an art based school...

seems like you didn't deserve to get accepted to either of those schools since you can't tell the difference between RIT and RISD.

<---RIT - Ad Photo Major.

edit: btw it's Rhode Island School of Design and Rochester Institute of Technology. so it's RIT/RISD not RSD or RIID.

Not me. Applied to Oxford, had to fly to NYC for an "interview," then was rejected a month or two later.

Yeah, my mistake. My friend goes to RIT. It's 2 in the morning cut me a break.

Advertising and hoping that in the long run I'd become an advertising manager of sorts for a company. Of course, I think I need to go for more education to achieve that.

Duke wasn't really my dream school but they were private so they more or less give you enough grants/loans to make sure you can afford to go. ALthough it's definitely a much bigger strain on my family than if I had went to UW

I didn't get into my "dream" schools (CalTech, MIT at the time, though nowadays I don't care so much anymore), but UC Berkeley wasn't a bad choice for EE (we're still #2 I think). Almost a full ride, too, which makes it quite a good deal.

College was a "dream" in itself. I got accepted to the sole 4-yr I applied to, Washington State (again, hardly a dream school).

But, although my parents could afford it, my dad was a firm believe of "you pay for your schooling, when you pass, we'll reimburse you".

Sadly, that discouraged me enough to not follow through with it.

Anyone here come from a family where college was not even a choice, based on income level? Anyone here had the experience of your parents sitting you down after that first "Open House College Day" at your High School and them telling you "Son...we know you want to go to college like your friends...but we can't help you....at all...good luck." ?

There was a day when college was not automagic. When you actually had to fill out forms and stuff (ZOMG! Forms and stuffz!) and go into debt to go to college. Not like now...grants and shiit up the wazoo. It used to be a challenge and an achievement to go to college...now it's a "gimee."

I don't know about dream college, but Wisconsin is the only school I applied to.

I kind of wanted to go to Milwaukee School of Engineering, but the cost was out of the question. In the end I'm happy I didn't go there.

I only applied to one school. I was accepted and went there. I did the first half of the application for MIT but never did the second half.

College costs are increasing waaaaay faster than the rate of inflation, and many people graduate with tens of thousands in loans.

Got accepted to go to Duke (pre-med) and to play soccer.

They couldn't "guarantee" me an athletic scholarship so I didn't go.

Funny, my father and his friends talk about how much easier it was to pay for college back then. You're seriously underestimating the amount of debt college kids go into. Rant about something you actually have a clue about.

it isnt easy even if you do have help from your family sometimes..my sister died and some of the money from the insurance is helping to pay for my college..i still have to struggle to make enough money to get by and still get a good gpa
