I can't imagine being able to sell it though. I looked on eBay and Craigslist a couple of weeks ago and it seems like you can't even give CRTs away now...

really? people dont buy good CRTs? If it has component or even composite inputs and is less than 10 years old, I'd think itd be worth something. It would still cost several hundred dollars to buy that new.

I have a projection HDTV I bought last year for pretty cheap. Even though I like it, I am tempted to sell it because it's massive, and we're moving across the country soon and I don't feel like trying to move it. I'd then pickup a flat panel when we get to where we're going.

I can certainly afford a new HDTV but I have no clue what to get. I also do not want to pay 8k for that Pioneer 1080p thats out there. I'm a little biased towards Pioneer since I've used the brand over the years and have found the products to be of high quality in terms of performance, design and operation. I might just wait for them to release the regular 1080p plasma.

I think you mean GAOO Superflat

Why would I know? I have the exact same TV! Built in 1993, it's been an awesome workhorse all these years.

Unfortunate part is that for the past two years it's been exhibiting some blooming problems where bright scenes cause it to expand the picture (for example: I sometimes can't see the ticker at the bottom of ESPN) and it displays some color bleeding where skin tones seem to bleed into the background. It's also gotten to the point where I have to crank up the brightness to its upper limit in order to get proper black levels.

Sigh, I guess it's almost time to retire it.

Yah, GAOO. Forgot how it was spelled.

Here is something sad, I have a 25 inch GE I bought 12 years ago. Finally replaced it with 27 inch flat screen CRT TV. Will probably keep this one for years too. I thought I was the only one here with regular old tv.

Nope, in fact I just bought a 35' Sony trinitron off craigslist for $150 to hook my Wii up to. I wont be buying an HDTV for a while.

So are you trying to sell your CRT TV? I ditched my 5-yr old 32" WEGA last month for $200. That's 25% what I paid for it :| I figured it'd be harder to sell after Black Friday.

Uh... well it was a 5 year old TV with old technology. It's halfway through it's useful life. How much did you expect to get for it? A lot of people don't want to buy a used TV, you never know when it might die.

I'm not frantically trying to sell my TV, because my TV cost $220. I'm just sitting back watching TV prices drop, because frankly I don't care enough to watch Law & Order in high definition. It's the same show, you just get to see more of Sam Waterston's wrinkles.

Bought a repaired Sony 32" CRT a few years back. Served me well and even for its age it still had a great picture. Sold it recently on local ad site for $200. Picked up a Sony 50" SXRD shortly after. Don't think I can go back to standard 4:3 tvs anymore.

35'? You sure it was a trinitron and not a Jumbotron?

Neither do we.......at 5 years old, it still has an excellent picture and works perfectly. A great TV and no reason to ditch her for the new stuff. When I move to a big screen HD, the WEGA will move into the computer room.

If I could I'd sell all 3 HDTVs. They're using the now obsolete and ancient 720p technology.

The year is 2006. 1080p is the real High Definition. Accept no substitutes. So yeah, I'll be selling a TV or two.

I bought a 36" new Wega last year for $800. - HS420 model which was fully loaded. HDTV, HDMI, 2-Component ins, 4 RCA's. Everything but the cable card slot.

TV is rarely used for HDTV as its family used and normally tuned into the Disney Channel. When in HD format, it's roughly 34"s wide and the colors are beautiful. I compared LCD's, Plasmas, and DLP's. This CRT beheamoth, all 260lbs of it, had the best quality at the time.

I'm money ahead by buying this and using it for 1yr as the prices have dropped more than the $800 I paid and the picture quality would not have been as good.

I upgraded from a 32" Trinitron.

Actually if ppl shopped for picture quality, nobody would by an flat panel (at least not here where there is no HDTV)

Actually I dont see any improvement in the new TV technology - we have digital TV broadcasting now (DVB) at it looks much worse than the analogue because of artefacts, blocking and generally washed out in comparison - probably because of low bitrates

What ever happened to the old 4:3 format that fit "regular TV's"? How about giving the consumer some options, instead of forcing us to upgrade from a perfectly serviceable TV to newer technology, just to watch their movies?
Fortunately, we've exhausted all the NetFlix/Blockbuster movies we want to see, (haven't been many good releases lately) and will be cancelling this week. I can just go to Blockbuster.Hollywood for something I really want to see...

WS has been the dominant format for films since the mid '50's. Get over it, FS isn't making any sort of a comeback.

To get that cropped, who's he talking to?, effect just hit the zoom button on your dvd player. This is also known as the, "Where do they find these terrible camera operators?" option.

You could also start watching classic films that were shot in 4:3 format. You said so yourself that you're tired of weak new releases. Try watching the films they fail at imitating, or go even further into the rabbit hole and read the books they 'adapt' to the screen. You don't want a solution though, you just want to rant and rave.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I watch the majority of my movies on a 27" 4:3 crt tv, and even with these low Black Friday prices I doubt I'll upgrade to a larger 16:9 tv any time soon.

Get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning bucko?
Actually, while widescreen is the long term format for movies released in theaters, virtually all movies released to VHS were re-formatted into the 4:3 format for standard television. Now, for the past couple of years, (since DVD has taken over home movie watching) they've done away with that, and only release movies in wide-screen. I really don't like to watch a movie more than once, (most just aren't that good) and I do read...probably more than most. Other than the movies we rent, I don't watch much TV. Just don't care for the idiot box enough to plant myself in front of it, and watch the mindless drivel they keep coming out with for "entertainment'...
I DO agree, so many of the movies they release are "weak". Whatever happened to making GOOD movies? It seems like it's all about quantity, not quality...

Yep. My old TV rocks on.

And yaknow what the biggest problem is with buying a new HDTV? You'll actually have to watch it enough to justify the investment.

You stole my thunder by not bristling up BoomerD. I was being an ass (sorry, and thanks for taking my snide remarks in stride). There are exceptions to the ws > fs debate (most 1.85:1 formats and even 2.35:1 ratios shot using super 35mm film) where the movie is shot using 4:3 aspect, but the scenes are framed and set up with ws in mind. This made vhs/dvd releases smoother when that format was used instead of resorting to pan and scan for full screen. (barf!) Because of that they were able to use the whole shot for the 4:3 version providing no equipment (mics, etc.) got in the way.

Here's a nice little site that shows the super35mm process I was going on about for anyone who is interested (also shows what you see when that process isn't used) - link

And if you purchase a 16:9 tv a lot of television shows will either have vertical bars or the image stretched. I rarely watch anything broadcast for tv, but I'd have the same problem. Instead of dealing with widescreen content on a standard tv I'd be dealing with full screen movies on a widescreen tv.
