Why not? I have about 15k saved up, and other than a $175/mo school loan expense, wouldn't have any expenses if I decided to travel for a month or two (besides necessities). I'd be willing to burn a few thousand if that meant I got to see a lot of places I'd love to go, and may not get another chance to see.

<---- Automotive and hanging on by a thread. 1/3 of plant (tooling plant) laid off. Lowest amout of work in 16 years that I've been here. Relatively new management (CEO on down) and not sure how they feel about having an "in house" tooling plant (all other tooling plants closed over the last 10 years except this one).

I feel they will close it within the next 6 months to a year.

We were just told last week that we're done on Dec. 31st so at least we have time to plan. We were acquired by a much larger company and their tech support is outsourced to India.

It's a big nest egg So I could travel for several years and not spend it all.
Plus it's not necessarily more expensive to travel than pay rent at home.

Not laid off, but predetermined termination. I'm temping for someone who quit in mid January, and it sounds like they found someone. So, I'm guaranteed at least 2 more days, and possibly next week if the candidate isn't free.

Things appear relatively stable at the moment but I'm quite paranoid.

The real danger I think is that my parent company might go under, dragging us down with them. We are currently their only business that is making money, & they're trying to sell us to improve their balance sheets. If they can't dump us they are in deep shit.

Somewhat. If it happens, I'll probably go back to school. Was kind of thinking about getting an ME degree.

If not that, I'll probably move back with parents and do all the work around the house that they are getting kind of old to be doing to earn my keep while I look for new employment. Hopefully it won't happen though.
