one of the best platforms of all time IMO.
cheap and fast, with multiple mb chipsets. seems like every self builder had one at some point.

personally, i've had 2 and still have one as a backup system.

Nope, pretty sure I had a Dell with a Pentium 4 2.4C, and RD-RAM. After that was either a 754 or 939.

IIRC My first socket A was a thunderbird 950. I also had a 1800+, 2400+,2500+, and I stuck with it all the way up to a 3200+ 400FSB barton. Went 754, then jumped on the C2D train and have been 775 since. This is on the main rig. I've had a few misc. secondary boxes that ran Intel/AMD..

I had one. An ECS K7S5A motherboard with a Duron 950mhz, eventually upgraded to an Athlon XP 2000+. My mom still has a Socket A system that she uses for her home office. Has an Athlon XP 1600+ in it. Slow as hell.

I joined late, XP1900+ followed by 2500+ mobile, different motherboards.
Also had a 1.1GHz Athlon or Duron at some point, but that was an inherited machine after the 1900+.

it got upgraded due to a mobo death to 754 at some point a few years ago, but I built 4-5, 2 for me, and a few for family

Where's the polll option for "tried them all?" Yes, had socket A. Yes, had socket 370. Yes, had socket 478. Yes, had socket 7 and Super 7. Yes, had socket 3. Yes, had socket 775. Yes, had socket 754. Yes, had socket 939. Yes, had socket AM2/AM2+/AM3. Yes, had socket 1156. Yes, had socket 1366.

I guess that just about covers all "consumer" ZIF sockets except for socket 423.

Yes.
And slot A and socket 754 and 939 and 940 and now AM2+.
I've been an AMD lover for many years now.

I skipped S478, S754 and AM2, otherwise yes. Don't forget Slot 1 and Slot A

I had a socket-A system, a KT4V-L with Via KT400 system, that was a misnomer, as it didn't support 400FSB or DDR-400. It did have a snazzy new AGP 8x slot though, that ended up with an ATI X850Pro in it. Had to upgrade the PSU when I got that card too, otherwise when I switched into 3D mode, all of the HDs reset.

Paired it up with an XP1800+. Due to limited vcore adjustment on the mobo, I could never overclock it past XP2000+ speeds. (My chip was 1.5v, and the higher XP chips were 1.65v, and the highest my mobo would let me adjust, was 1.55v. Even though the mobo also supported the 1.65v CPUs.)

Edit: Forgot to mention, the CPU+mobo cost only $140-something at a computer show. A friend bought it for me for my birthday that year.

3200+ was my first build ever. Its running my fileserver now. Well, almost...I picked up another board that's doing it so I have two skt As in the house. Hope to get many more years of service out of 'em.

I had 3 different ones. I still have 2 of them in my closet. Ironically my Tbird 900 machine still works but my Athlon XP 2800+(I think thats what the cpu was but im not 100% certain) does nothing when you press the power button(probably a dead psu but who cares).

I had a Duron 700 @ 933 using the pencil trick along with some stupidly heavy copper heatsink/fan that made the mobo warp. I swear Socket A had really awful retention clips. Socket 754 was somewhat better.

My Dad is still using a computer with a Socket A Athlon XP 2400+.

My little used to use a computer with an Athlon XP 2000+. The Soyo Dragon mobo probably still works, but it has memory error issues though.

My old comp had an Athlon XP 2600+, which spent some time overclocked at 2.3GHz/400FSB at 2.0V. Didn't pass Prime95 for even 1 second, but was stable for a month of use before it crashed.

From Socket A, I jumped right up to LGA775.

I agree, probably the best Platform I used.

Duron 650
TBird 1300(? not sure about this one)
Palomino 1700
Barton 2800--Currently in an Old Mobo gathering Dust with the HS still attached. Was going to throw it into another Box 4.5 years ago, but never got around to it.

My first build was an abit AN7 with a Mobile Barton 2500+. Loved that system, but it was plagued by a bad PSU that also killed the vid card. Sold off the guts of the system and went with an intel system with integrated video just to get myself up and running again. Miss that system.

The classic 'Barton' Athlon XP 2500+ was my primary workstation cpu until 2008 when I finally moved to Core 2 Duo ('Penryn'). That may have been the longest I ever stayed with one cpu, other than perhaps the 65C02 in my first Apple //c.

I now own three socket A machines, all with Athlon XP 2500+, but all of them are wonky in some way. One of them won't POST at all. Been too busy to seriously diagnose them... Still can't get my AM2+/AM3 Athlon II X4 to POST!

No, the slick pc world saleman mesmorised me and dad with the more expensive with a bigger number 1700 giggafurtz P4, which seemed a better deal than the cheaper smaller number 1400 jigglefitz box that had an amd badge tacked on to it. I didnt know much about hardware back then.
