How many of you have fought the law?

I went to court one time for a lidar speeding ticket and tried to prove that it wasn't me. It didn't work but I did get a big discount on the ticket. Regardless, I voted for "Fought, law won."

I have passed the attitude test more than once in my life. "Yes sir, No sir, going home sir, yes sir" Although these were all in my under 21 days.

I've fought the law several times. MOST of the time, the law won...but I've had my little victories along the way. (way to stick it to the man, Boomer!)

I've fought and the law won (speeding ticket 100+ MPH)
Handful of times I've plead down speeding tickets
Never anything more than that.

Went to traffic court, cop 100% lied and said that I ran a red light & nearly caused an accident. "Liar liar pants on fire" is apparently not an effective defense, so I got to pay court fees in addition to the ticket.

I fought a speeding ticket going 55 in a 45. I said the speed limit sign wasn't visible, the cop said ignorance is not an excuse. Went and took pictures of the sign from the road and was completely obscured. Went to court, still lost, the judge didn't even spend more than 2 seconds looking at the photos and said guilty.

It's been a mixed bag. You seldom 'win' when fighting the law, but you sometimes make out better than expected. With a fair fight, I'd have won.

Just finished winning - on Valentine's day. I already posted what happened in several other threads so I won't rehash it:

TLDR - License expired on my birthday, hit dear, cop threw the book at me, it's a CRIMINAL offense in Michigan. As bad as DWI.

Went in with my high-powered lawyer and the prosecutor hemmed and hawed and then said to the judge, "this is a little embarrassing, but we were never given the paperwork that allows us to prosecute this case". Bam. Dismissed. That asshole knew this the whole time (the prosecutor) but strung me along for 3. freaking. months. and 4 court visits.

My lawyer told me he thinks they decided to go that route because he had filed so many motions and they knew it was trumped-up bullshit that would have been a warning in any other state. In MI it is a suggested 2 year installment fine, + potential jail time, + impounding the car if you can't get someone else to drive it home immediately.

Mostly traffic courts due to speeding. I usually was able to plead it down to non-moving violation with no point. Pay the cost and move on with my life.

But I stood my ground against border guards from some developing country demand of "tips". They hold me back for about 10 minutes but I was free to go after that. Greedy bastards.

Never had any incidents where I had to fight. Had some incidents where I was in trouble, but I was at fault and just accepted the charges. Just stupid petty stuff like parking tickets etc. I don't see the point of fighting a parking ticket if I truly did violate the rule (ex: expired meter).

If it was something major where the charges I could face are huge then I'd fight it and hope for the best.

I didn't fight the law but I did beat it once.

When I was 21 I had a few drinks and put my car in a ditch. Cop rolled up and asked me if I had been drinking. I bluffed and told him no and if it would save time I would take a breathilizer. Well he bought it, helped me get my car out and sent me on my way.

Got caught driving with no license, and got caught by a sheriff doing 80+ in a 30. Both times I received no ticket, and was free to carry on. Ive got more, but those are my 2 biggest ones. To the two cops who were so cool...........thanks again.

I had my share of speeding tickets in college - mostly from driving in rural areas long distance going from city to city. Most times I just bite the bullet and complete a stupid online defensive driving course and pay the court fees.

That said, ever since growing up, getting a job, and living in the city I haven't had any issues. There is always a bigger fish to fry, so everytime I'm going 75 on the 65 mph highway, I can usually slow to 70 at least and they don't chase me.

I have heard though that plenty use our hyatt legal benefit from our employer to get traffic tickets dismissed. I've also heard that an easy way to get them to dismiss the ticket is to keep delaying the court date... Reason being is by default the originally assigned court date is a day in which that cop is DEDICATED to being in court. So there is little to no chance you can ever get it dismissed via court. HOWEVER, if you delay the court date and push it to a date that the cop isn't designated to be at it's much more likely he won't show.

YMMV, and I've never had to go this route, just something I've heard.
