How many of you still keep paper maps in your vehicle?

Between navigation systems, portable units, smart phones, tablets, etc obviously this is obsolete in a way but I still keep them handy in my car. No power required.

I don't currently, but I plan to throw a couple of basic maps in each of my vehicles. One detailed map of the region I'm in, and one basic map of the country or North America.

That way, if there's a disaster, or even if I'm just on a long trip and my GPS is unavailable for some reason, I have something to fall back on. It's not like they take up much room.

Yep. Even though my Expedition has a nav system, I still use atlases and maps for general directions and trip planning.

I used to for work, and for paddling, but not anymore. I don't use gps or anything. I'll sketch my own map copying from the web, and use that. It simplifies it, and makes it easier to see what i need to see.

I use a map in my trucks, a nice little booklet tucked into the sun visor.

But at home I use google maps and street view, even to do Estimates for lawn care and window cleaning.

i take screenshots of maps of where i need to go on my tablet & take it with me in case i don't have a connection, but that's about it.

I've found that the GPS maps are not always correct so I keep a good paper map in my car. Some navigation sites have my 7 yo house in the wrong place or on the wrong side of the street.

I would die without Google Maps/Nav.

So glad the days of flipping through a Thomas guide, trying to memorize streets to turn on, flipping through pages are gone. Also printing out directions from GMaps or Mapquest, which is useless if you aren't at the home/office.

Pretty much these days can just say, "Navigate to ____" and it'll guide me there with ease, even give the traffic conditions and alternate routes.

i have and use a GPS, but I also have a PA state map in my car in case something were to happen to the GPS.

Haven't used a Rand McNally map since early 2000 when GPS and Navigation software became widely available.

Used Delorme Street Atlas USA when I drove from San Antonio, TX to Los Angeles, CA summer 2002 with my laptop. Brought a map just in case of lost satellite signal, but the GPS that time were accurate within 30 feet IIRC.

Current setup in car that helps me find my way just in case I get lost.

Yes, I have an original paper GPS in my vehicle at all times of travel. Sold by Walmart for $5.00, never needs batteries and has no voice.

Same here. maps in the side pockets but haven't used them in years. GPS just can't be beat.

My aunt wanted maps on our last trip. I used Google maps, and she used Mapquest before we left home; both were crap. We went to eight gas stations before we found one that sells maps.

They were worthless - not detailed enough to get where we wanted to go.

I've always loved maps and collect them. Learning to read and use maps is one of the things everyone should know before leaving home. I was the navigator on many family trips as a child. The online and mobile mapping apps have gotten better but, they still suck compared to a good physical map.

I do just in case I'm in an area without service or my battery dies or some other technological failure is happening.

I'm pretty good at memorizing where I need to go. Phone is used for backup. I don't keep maps in the car or have a standalone GPS.
