Got it recently to smooth out play back from my NAS to my PS3 and to speed up transfers from my server to my NAS.

I was under the impression that gigabit ethernet had been mainstream at the consumer level for at least the last 6 years...? I remember helping my dad setup a gigabit router/switch a long time ago.
I'm not trying to sound snobbish or anything like that, I just figured it was about as common as DVD players at this point. My dad is a tech-nerd, but not someone who's usually THAT far ahead of the curve... lol.

We have a bunch of Macs, which have all had gigabit standard for like 5 years. The only machine without it is the old Windows box.
Yawn. Every motherboard I've seen since 2004 has had a gigabit port.
True that!
gigabit is so cheap these days there's no reason not to do it if you have the need.

As far as I know, gigabit NICs both addon and integrated have been mainstream for 4-6 years. It's the routers/switches that are not all that mainstream.

If he has gigabit ethernet (which he says he does), then he could be getting 100+ MB(yte)/sec file transfers.

What are you using for the NAS? I'm investigating setting one up and I'm very concerned about speed. Mainly it's to have centralized data for my main PC and my laptop. My main PC has a Realtek 8110S Gigabit Ethernet controller, but the laptop just wireless g.Originally posted by: Kanalua
Gigabit here (Cat 6, too).
PC
NAS
PS3
10/100
TV (Samsung 52" 750 series)
router (buffalo with DD_WRT)
I was running without Cat6, just cat 5 for a while, and the network speeds sucked! Got me some Cat6 on monoprice...and speeds are much more respectable (thought the NAS is slow as crap).
