Hey, recently there have been quite a few Powerbook threads (including mine). I just purchased one and I love it... how many of you have had similar experiences. I noticed that quite a few of you have nothing but good things to say about them (even on a PC forum). So... whatcha got?

My only complain is the price.... other than that they r great lappy. I've just sold my 1st powerbook (15" TI 500Mhz) and got myself a 15 TI 867...... seems like apple has fixed the bad airport reception !!!!

Used to own 2 snowbooks b4 this.

I have a 15" 1 Ghz AlBook. Got it in February and have loved every minute of it. Only thing I would like to do with it right now would be to upgrade the hard drive to a 7200 RPM drive. I'll probably hold off on that until new 80 or 100 GB models come out and it also depends how well I do on tests this fall .

Good to see other people happy with their new Macs.

Yeah I do wish they offered the 7200rpm drive...

As for the price... they are competatively priced against high end PC notebooks (which is their main competition). Lets face it, there aren't many PC notebooks that come with everything standard like the PB does. If you want to compare price wise you have to look at a 15" PB 1.5ghz vs a T42 w/ some nice options for instance... If you actually do price them out... as I did before buying... you'll notice the PB is actually a bit cheaper than a comparable PC... it's just that most people don't compare them to high end PC notebooks...

Very nice to hear...

Way - did you order it BTO w/ that much ram or did you just get a 1gb dimm from crucial or another source (what i'm guess). Did you notice a nice performance boost?

I got the 1 GB of RAM from a third party. Everything runs much smoother with it---switching between windows, opening new apps while others are running, etc.

I had an iBook once. Turned it in after one day.
Don't get me wrong, the computer itself was fine. Only problem was a bunch of USB devices not recognized, but that was with no drivers.
The machine worked fine with no harware problems and no software problems(that I could identify).

I just wasn't liking the OS X. After using windows so long it seemed like I was fighting to get basic things done. Probably just not used to it. If I had started with Macs then the new OS would have seemed more intuitive, I'm sure.
The ability to dual boot with OS 9 was neat, if I had any favorite OS 9 programs. Which I didn't. The experiance also taught me I have missed the Mac bandwagon and am officially set in my ways with WinXP and Linux.

The iBook was a G4 800Mhz if I'm not mistaken. 256mb SDR. CD Reader. 40GB HD. Nothing special in Video or Audio.
If I only had to do basic office work on my lap and had no other interests, I would go with a cheap eMachine or Sony Vaio laptop.

I'm really not interested in Mac Vs Windows flames. Thats already been covered enough. If anyone wants to criticize my hardware choices I'm all ears.

Got my iBook about 2 months ago. This thing is just great for what I do with it.

BTO with 60GB HDD, BT and WiFi - added an extra 512MN Ram myself. Also got the TV adapter as I don't have a real DVD player. The iBook which very rarely turns on its Fan is a great substitute, i can even remote control it with my Bluetoothed Mobile Phone. On the Road it has good battery life of about 4 Hrs or more.

A similary specced IBM X-series (it had to be 12" - anything larger is just to big for carrying around practically IMO) would have cost me 300? more - though with a faster 1,4 P-m CPU but no internal BT, 512MB RAM instead of 768MB and half the HDD size. Also the iBook has a Radeon 9200mobility doing the graphics work whereas the IBM would have had Intel Extreme Graphics *yuck*. So yeah it was a good deal IMO

Just got mine from Amazon.com yesterday. Apple Powerbook 12", 1.3 GHz, 768 MB RAM, 60 GB HD, SuperDrive.

Been playing around with it a bit. They are just so sleek, and I'm already getting into OS X. I don't think I'll ever truly "switch", but its nice to have something different.

For a couple of cool apps I have discovered, you guys might want to try Temperature Monitor, QuickSilver, and Konfabulator. Temperature Monitor is a program that will let you monitor the temps of your processor. QuickSilver is a searching program that is incredibly handy, I love it! Konfabulator is a widget program that allows you to load desktop Widgets, which can do just about anything. Do a search for these at www.versiontracker.com

Anyone else have any indispensable programs they have found?

I just ordered my G4 ibook yesterday night. 1ghz, airport extreme, 256MB, 30GB, pretty standard i guess, i don't need much, just to do some school work and stuff. Does extra RAM give a noticeable improvement?

256MB is extremely limited for OS X. As a friend of mine said, "RAM is like oxygen to OS X." I recently upgraded from 512MB to 1GB and noticed a pretty descent performance increase. I would say grab a 512MB SODIMM and you should be pretty good.

Definitely upgrade your ram if you have the cash. Ram isn't treated the same in OSX as it is in a PC. Get a gig stick if you can afford it... if not 512 will even give you an adaquate speed increase. It's just the difference in how the machines work... macs need more ram.

Also, if any of you use your notebook on hotspot networks often check out macstumbler. It's a very helpful app that picks up all wireless signals in your range and displays them in an easy to follow fasion. It's also a great way to bumb an internet connection off your neighbor! J/K
