WPM is the biggest load of shit in the world. I took a typing test, got over 65 WPM (with backspacing and corrections) and got complimented. When I started working, I'd type at my regular, relaxed 30-40 WPM. Unless you're plagarizing books, what's the point? Even then, you could scan it nowadays.

it probably matters for dictation, but other than like court transcribers who use short-hand, who does dictation anymore?

I'm thinking that they don't want hunt and peckers (<~~LOL) who can't operate a keyboard.

I did data entry all through high school and some summer jobs during college (best jobs because of the ole walkman). At the headhunters they test you and I was doing 80ish at the time and they were shocked. Internet people can do 90+ spending so much time at the keyboard but of course it's more prominent these days than back in '95. I would guess that while you're behind the curve now, you're fine for what they need.

In my opinion, 80+ would be good. The real key is whether or not you can touch type. If you're a hunt-and-pecker or if you have to keep looking at the keyboard you're missing a lot of the value. You're best when you're not even thinking that you're typing, but that doesn't necessarily translate to WPM.

Bullshit.

I believe it, I know I can type faster than I am right now if I practiced. I slow down at punctuation and numbers. I'm positive I could reach 140-150.
Hell, there were people on the old school web typing game TyperA (http://typera.tk/) that would destroy me, hitting 200+

I don't believe that you get 140+ consistently... unless you're using Dvorak. I'm sure you can hit 140WPM but how long you can keep it for... The world record is only around 150 consistently. I can hit about 120WPM consistently and up to 140+WPM for top speed. Although, your actual typing speed should be the speed you can type at and get about 98+% accuracy.

As for the OP's original question I would say that over 85WPM would be fast. I don't really know why you would need to be that fast though. And if you're talking about dictation you'll need to type about 150WPM to keep up with someone's speaking.
