How much bandwidth does ICQ consume?

Situation: 512 kbit/sec line shared by >200 users, most casual users. If all had ICQ open, but idle, how much of this line would be consumed?

icq doesn't do much unless you're sending and receiving messages...

message sending doesn't even make the light on my router blink

Next to nothing. Doesn't take much to send those little messages and remain online. File transer's a different story, obviously.

The Keyword &quot;IDLE&quot;, nothing will take place untill you do something such as send a message. But for an estimate of how much bandwidth it actually takes up when sending a message, i think its around under a kilobit(something like 0.8 of a kb).

200ppl on your icq? damn imagine what would happen if they all sent you a message similtaneously. Your sound card would crash with all the little incoming message sounds. LOL

always did wonder tihs myself. when im about to go into a game i close icq for to save a bit of ram, but i also wondered if this would help my bandwidth a bit too. i tend to get messaged a lot so..

It might not take that much bandwith, but icq2000 sure takes up alot of system resources, lol.

With my list of 287 people, ICQ takes about 50K/day idle. Only uses bandwidth when people get on/off.

Almost no bandwidth, but the system resources it takes up is ridiculous. Upon boot, I have something like 82% available. Close ICQ and I have 91%.
