What games do you play?

For most people, it's probably not necessary at the moment. However, with RAM being as cheap as it is right now...

Another thing to think about is that if you try to run 4 sticks of RAM, you may be forced to run your RAM at slower speeds and command rates.

not at all, you'll go 2T(command rate) which will erase the very little benefit gained. if only for gaming not worth it, maybe photoshop.

For most things it probably won't help much at all, and because of the 2T timings, may hurt some programs. I play some MMORPG's and it didn't actualy benifit me there, less lag/page file usage, but for most other things it doesnt make a noticable differance.

For many applications, 1GB does no more than 512MB.

However, in gaming, increasing from 512MB to 1GB offers a performance boost of upto 10%-15%, but only in newer games (ie directX 8 and 9). It also means that your hard drive will need to be accesed less, which is never a bad thing.

But unless you do very heavy duty multimedia or run a server, you probably wont notice the difference between 1GB and 2GB. You'd be better off saving the money for a faster processor/graphics card if it's gaming that you want. Also, remember that if you get 4 sticks of ram, you will have to drop your latencies to 2T, and that may actually slow your games down.

IMHO, if you have 1GB of good RAM, then increasing to 2GB would not be worth the price.

RAM is simply fast, temporary storage space. Insufficient capacity causes paging to and fro the HDD and thus degrades performance. Task Manger Performance tab shows usage. When Commit Charge Peak is greater than Physcial Memory Total, then paging has occured. Performance suffers directly with the frequency. If an application like a game constantly causes the capacity to be exceeded, then adding more would once again achieve equilabrium but, I stress, excess capacity does not improve performance so do not waste money that could otherwise be better spent on a CPU or viddy card.

Exactly, I'd use only 256-384mb of ram. 512mb or more becomes redunbant.

I would definately go with something more than 256k, because some games (ie Painkiller) even require at least 512k. Stick with a gig and you'll be happy.
