Suppose I would buy the following,

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice (S939, 2.2GHz, 512KB, Boxed)

and this mobo,

Abit Fatal1ty AN8 SLI, nForce4 SLI (PCI-e, Sound, LAN, SATA II, RAID, 1394)

For link to mobo look here,

http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1&model=246

combine this with a heatsink like the XP-120 with a Panaflo fan, how much do you think I can overclock this processor and still stay below the 55°C marging while running at full load??

Anyone that has a similar setup and knows a little bit about it then shout me your response,

thnx alot

with that heatsink and fan you'd be hardpressed to make that cpu rise over 55C. As long as you dont overvolt you should be able to reach the limits of the cpu with that setup.

Save some of your hard earned money and just buy the 3000+ Venice and use the HSF that comes with it. You can probably reach 2.6to 2.7Ghz with it. If you buy the 3500+ and better HSF maybe you will get an extra 100-150Mhz out of it.

Ok thnx, and I already own that heatsink, its now cooling my older CPU, a standard 3400+, but gonna sell this one I think and get a venice running at 2.7 something So you'r saying I don't even need to tinker with the vcore, just multiplier and fsb settings and off ya go?

BTW good point Richard, a 3000+ venice would be very nice as well and saves me a whole 200$ in my country(Belgium).

BTW, I have this Mushkin memory,

Mushkin 512MB PC3200@222 DUAL pack (BH6) so 1Gb of this mushkin

would that be suitable for that Abit board I wanna buy???

no no, voltage will help you reach higher frequencies, what I meant is that as long as you dont over-overvolt (hehe, as in more than absolutely needed) you should be ok.

What about if I had a 3200+ Venice with a Zalman 7700-Cu HSF? How high could I OC it to? Or would it be better to buy a 3000+ Venice with the same HSF?

It all depends on the CPU. I've seen Venice CPUs that could barely hit 2.4 GHz, it's all the luck of the draw.

3200+ will make you rely less on your fsb; you really need to be able to hit 300 fsb (all right, htt) to get a good 3000+ overclock. 3400/3500+ is just a waste of cash.

Am running you by a little something and just lemme know if I am correct what I am saying ok, I am still nubbie at overclocking.

Ok here we go,

You already know I have that Mushkin PC3200 black line BH-6 memory and its been known that these things can easily take up to 500Mhz(or so I am told), so 470Mhz@2.8V should be a certainty right???

Ok so I was thinking, when I get and overclock my 3200+ venice with a 10x multiplier to 280X10 then if I were to run at 1:1 timings then this would mean my memory has to be able to run at 560Mhz, this it ofcourse cannot do eh. So I have to lower the memory divider yes?

Now what the noob is thinking here,

200 = HTT Mhz
183 = HTT x .90 = Mhz
166 = HTT x .83 = Mhz
150 = HTT x .75 = Mhz
133 = HTT x .66 = Mhz
100 = HTT x .50 = Mhz

By going from this table I would then set the mem at 166, so then I have 280x0.83 = 232.4Mhz, meaning the mem then runs at 464Mhz am I correct??? Does it work this way and will I indeed be able to get my mushkin up this high?? Also what does this do for the temperature on my mushkin when its running at 464Mhz, also is the 2.8V enough to still keep my tight timings of 2-3-2-5(CL-trCD-tRP-tRAS)?

thnx again, means alot, its allways hard researching wether or not all my components will work well to reach my desired overclock before I actually buy it.

Oooh one more question, if I set that mem divider to 166 does this then mean that in the end my memory is running slower cuz the default value is 200?

470 @ 2.8 volts? Not so likely, is it?
The Winbonds all love high voltage. Those 500 speeds you see are @ ~3.4 volts. OCZ's VX are guaranteed to hit 500 MHz @ 3.3 volts, but those 're hand picked. So that 470 is plenty likely, but not at 2.8 volts.
Mushkin Redline takes 3.2 volts to hit 480.
Secondly 2800 MHz on a Venice is hoping for a lot. I'm not saying you won't hit it (especially if you do push voltage), but it's not guaranteed.

but the Abit mobo I am talking about can go to 3.4V can it not, only question is, can that mushkin take that much voltage? Allthough I'd be happy with 2.7Ghz as well ofcourse!

I run 520 @ 2.8v

Hiya Bjc,

what are your running temperatures on your die, idle and when running full load??? Also, so you'r saying my winbond can take that 3.4V easily then, don't wanna cook my Mushkin

That's TCCD, though, not Winbond.

Laymen: It *should* handle that voltage, but it's not guaranteed, and I decided not to get UTT/BH-5 and push it because I saw too many people killing it after a few months. *shrug*
