Having no college experience myself, I'm curious as to how much college prepped those of you that did go, for your current job? Or at least for your first job?
Maybe 10% of what I do is stuff I learned in school. Frankly, high school prepared me more. Most of what I do is write, and I was lucky to attend a public HS that put a very high priority on writing and reading comprehension skills. College refined those skills, I suppose.
NukeE degree working as a Nuclear Licensing Engineer. My education will apply more when I move out of licensing and we get this thing built.
From an oral and written communication standpoint it helped me a lot, from the standpoint of actual specific skills for my job, it helped only minimally.
It didn't with the exception of social skills. College was just another maturing process for me...I can't think of anything I learned in class that has any affect on what I do.
A lot. My university offered a streamd of sorts in its Computer Science department, and I chose the "Software Engineering" stream. Gained some excellent presentation and team work skills as a result.
I would say about 10% of what I do is influenced by college. The rest is on the job or self study.
Though that 10% from college could typically be considered "foundation" type stuff that all other knowledge is built on so maybe that 10% has more weight then everything else, hard to say.
Pretty much none other than learning how to write properly. My job has nothing to do with what I went to school for. That said, those four years was worth every penny I paid for the experience. And the degree was/is still useful to have even though I don't apply it directly. It cuts down on the on the job time I'm required to have for advanced certificates and will come into play at promotion time. Also can use it for grad school that will apply to my career.
Zero, since I'm working a menial job until something in my field comes along. In terms of work in my actual field, I'd say most of it is built on experience on the job. Though I'd say my college prepared me a lot for it.
