Meh, nothing yet, but the average for '06 Aero grads was $54k from RPI, it should be around 60k for me in '10.

GOOD GRIEF

Some people here are making serious money. Well, I completed a Masters in Public Administration and a JD. I make 65K

But, I work for the government and I work about 35 hours a week

Then again, I think I might have to try the private sector.

I work in contract administration and management.

Yeah, you could jump to the private sector and double that. I'm working on my JD now (business undergrad) and planning to stay with my current employer when I graduate. Not a law firm, so 40 hrs a week, good salary (not what a firm pays, but the hourly will be higher given I'm not booking 70 hrs at my desk a week). I'd chime in with what I started here, but this was my 2nd job out of college, and you can expect a significant bump if you change jobs about 6 mos - 1 year in.

Of course, 65k is a nice salary to live off of, and you have plenty of free time to enjoy. To me, that's a lot more important than dollar compensation. This thread should be titled "How many hours a week do you work and what's your hourly pay work out to?" Heh.

EDIT: To clear up any confusion, I'm an evening student, which would explain why I've made reference to actual employment as well.

$50K flat. BS Civil Engineering (Dec '06).

I'm about $2k below the university avg, which kind of pisses me off (I didn't check the #'s until after I had already signed). Meh, the first few weeks or so I spent mulling that over and over. It was psychological splinter knowing that most other graduates were making $2k-$4k more simply b/c they actually KNEW the right range for my major, my area of work. That kind of mistake on my part I will (hopefully) never make again. It scars me even to this day, the same way a bad engineering exam would. Alright, rant over

I wish I could show this thread to my dad. He's a doctor (prob. making somewhere around 400k/yr) and in his mind I should be making > 100k starting out.

I was wondering...are there any ChemE's out there? That is my major and I'd like to know what range is 'normal.'

I work for a chemical company and know plenty of ChemE's. They start out in the $58-62K range fresh out of college. I am an IT guy, and we get paid less than the ChemEs because we are not the core business. It makes sense though.

Sounds pretty much spot on. You can probably make even more bank if you switch/transition into pharmaceuticals somewhere along the way.

around 55 to 60k, if you extended it out to a full year's salary

i think acceptable, assuming a major metropolitan city, would be anywhere above 40, good would be 60 and higher, imo.

When I read some of the other salary threads it sounded like everyone and their uncle made $182,024.00 a year plus benefits.

I felt kinda lame, especially since my girlfriend is in optometry and will probably start at like $90k =)

There is NOTHING wrong with starting at $60k! I have 8 years experience as an industrial engineer, and am proud of my $65k salary (even though it's on the low side). You can't compare yourself to people who make more. Just remember, you're in something like the top 10% of wage earners. (Would like to see actual statistics on that.) $60k is awesome!

No kidding. Starting at $60k? I think most people here would be happy to be making $60k PERIOD.

BTW notice how the people on ATOT who always have the latest and greatest in their daily updated sigs like quad video cards and dual 30" displays, a brand new corvette every 3 months, etc, never post in the 'how much do you make?' threads? Don't be put down by the BS. The difference between saying you make 60k or 600k is just one more key to press.

Look like I am not the only one who is tired of all the BS.

OP, here is a link for you.

You can go to salary.com and other websites. Keep it mind the number depends greatly on where you live and other factors. Don't take the information as gospel.

For some of you that read this whole thread, I was refered to this thread.

You decide whether it is hard to believe or not, especially the ones that make over 100K before they were even 20 years old. Must be somekind of Doogie Howser, M.D.

BTW, look at my post in that thread, I never said none of that were true, but I seriously doubted the numbers in the poll. As of right now, no one PM me of how they got so well compensated in such an early age.

Thanks so much for the post. it was really helpful. I'm reading it right now and I like what I'm reading. ChemE's are the highest paid right outta college. Yea, I know. Engineers top out fast, but at least I can live it up right now...then go back for more schooling and hopefully be smart enough to start my own engineering consulting firm.

You might not ever make millions as an engineer (barring starting your own firm), but at all of the companies I interviewed at, engineers "topped out" at ~$200k or so. They also have fellow positions that are the equivalent of VPs, although I'd imagine it's incredibly difficult to make it that far, as with any VP position probably.

Dude as an FYI, I know MANY MANY people who make 6 figures out of college/early to mid 20's. A friend of mine (VERY smart admiteddly) got a MS from Cornell at age 22 and works at Google... starting salary out of college was like 95k plus 20k bonus. Know MANY people who went into investment banking who make that kind of money (100k-200k) easy. Keep in mind, Ibanking is like working 2 1/2 jobs but still. It all depends on where you live. Me, I graduated in '05 with a BS in Computer Engineering. Made 48k out of college.

Wow, I wish I grew up like 40 years ago or something, I have that jealousy for people who knew what the 50s and 60s were like.... but thats b/c I have no clue what they were like! lol
But, 40 years ago we didn't have pc's and boards to message on...

OP
$40K out of school with an Information Systems degree, in my 2nd year now and I got a 10% raise after 1 year. I am going to go back to school to make more money, IST degree isn't really worth much from what I can find.

I work with all engineers, mechanical mostly, and some civil and electrical, in Houston, right out of school engineers are making around $50k.

I made $32256 straight out of college (BS in chemistry) as a physical scientist at the Naval Research Lab in 1999.

I now make ~$120k as a patent law professional (not an attorney yet, but will be soon).

Philosophy Degree 99'
Teaching Degree 05'

Started out at 12,000 a year, now at 21,000 a year..... LOL, it is true what they say about some of us philosophy grads.

To my credit or discredit(depending on your view of the importance of money), I hate work, love time off, thus my severely crippled income.

I am a substitute teacher ($90 day) and a HS independent study coordinator ($25 hr).

Well I managed to get the company I wanted to work for to up their offer from $61,500 to $70000. So starting out of college I'm at $70,000 with some very nice benefits (profit sharing 2x yr, individual performance bonuses, health-care, etc.). I feel very lucky.
