I was more excited when it was going to GM and fannie/freddie but that's just me.

I sympathize with your point. At least GM rather quickly paid back their debt (IIRC) and, well, jobs were at least saved. While I think GM more or less deserved to fail for that, the supply sector that fed them their parts would have been hit bigly, still.

Freddie/Fannie....yeah fuck 'em. At least there is no mystery that the current debt the middle class and poors and 85%ers are currently accruing due to this massive republican wealth-redistribution is being sent off to a handful of corporatists that are already well into hoarding their new windfall, buying back stocks, and releasing that good money in the form of dividends (pretty much only benefiting their besties).

Oh, and further deregulation of the financial and real estate sectors. Because we didn't learn anything, apparently. So it goes.

10% increase expected in 2019 on top of whatever increase already coming. This made possible by the Cons tax bill eliminating the individual mandate. If they can't repeal and replace, they'll just continue to torpedo until, at the expense of the middle class.

This increase is expected for singles making about 50k to families of 4 making 100k, again, this is simply additional to whatever increases would be coming.

And I'm with ya, health coverage is expensive as hell, it's like taking out another mortgage without owning anything at the end.

Not only is it taking out a 2nd mortgage, it's your employer taking one out too. Mine pays 65% (used to be 75% until this year). So they're buying a NICER house without actually getting a house!

Educate yourself about "Obama's" debt.

I love this chart. Posted it several times in the tax cuts threads.

Not that it makes a difference tho to the Trumpos. They are determined to believe Obama spent $10T on Korans and free weed for brown people rather than the last time we had an R in the Whitehouse.

Well, yeh, but Obama's tax cuts went to the wrong people, the middle class. He actually raised taxes at the top.

There's no miracle of trickle down in that.

This is where Dems are dumb tho. Obama barely ever mentioned it. Why doesn't anyone know that he passed not only passed the 6th largest (bigger than Trump's) he also passed the 4th largest.

But there was no push or sell. Meanwhile you have ppl endorsing a traitor just because they think he gave them free money.

Missed fricken opportunity.

Fed taxes went down $320/month.

This thread was too early, only ~10% of people have the tax cut reflected on their paycheck at this point.

What do I give a shit about texas? Don't you marry your cousins there or something?

wtf do you do for a living? for anybody pompous to make such a idiotic statement you must not have a real job.

True. I spend all of my time posting ideological rants in this forum. Because it matters.

I lived in Europe for 4 years and i can tell you Europe is MUCH more expensive than the US.

I can tell YOU that it's much cheaper than australia. The earth revolves around the sun. Not the united states. Forgive the lateness of my reply you arrogant wank stain.

Obama should have had chants, some rallies, I'm sure the obstructionist party of short term memory loss would have come around

Noted, it's important to note that saving whatever is given now is imperative, as later the bill will be higher.

That would never happen, but the sell needs to happen to the middle. Dems are just terrible at messaging even when they are right on policy.

What's Dems economic message now? Does anyone even know?

This "A Better Deal" stuff.. Clumsy.

Better than what? Trump's deal? So you are admitting it's a deal, but you have a better one.. ok what is it on taxes? ...

Nothing? Oh, you are not taking about Mr Art of the deal, but rather riffing on FDRs new deal from 700 years ago... like Americans actually know history.. Hahahaha.

So what's the plan then? Protecting the illegal immigrant kids and transgender. Ok, I get it, not saying it's wrong..

But now we're all in on the Bleeding Heart stuff to a populace that's quite racist and will turn a blind eye to anything if it means more money.

IMO, the message is watch and learn why you don't vote R. What D's need to focus on is reminding America why policies have lasting effects, years later the bill comes and the party of short term memory loss wants to blame the D's they voted for again. Short and sweet, so I guess that's the baseline, who will sell it?

I wonder how many people are going to have a very unpleasant surprise around this time next year when they realize they forgot to adjust their exemptions down to compensate for the loss of the mortgage interest/SALT deduction.

I grew up in a dirt poor river town in the midwest. These are people that don't have two nickels to rub together. When they are trying to put food on the table and keep their homes, they really don't care about what bathrooms people are using (no matter how big of a deal the media on both sides make of this). If a strong and charismatic democrat had approached them with a plan to address their economic concerns no one would be talking about how racist and transphobic they are cause the democrats would've won the election. Instead, they believed (wrongly) Trump's rhetoric about making America great again and all that entails.

How would you present a solution for such individuals?

Are there opportunities they aren't taking advantage of?

From what I can tell, Dems want to help those less fortunate.

How would you present a solution for such individuals?

It would be quite difficult. Decades of federal assistance and the place is still a shithole, the schools are shit (my high school was something like 307th of 325 in terms of quality in the state with over half the students getting a free lunch), and meth and hopelessness is a huge problem.

The only thing that's going to improve their lives is economic growth. Trump promised this to them via protectionism (which is counter-productive) but these people are desperate for anything.

Another thing that can be done is to completely reform eduction to provide high schoolers with real skills. I was part of a pilot program at the high school to teach kids vocational skills (mine was CCNA training, but they had programs for mechanics, welders, etc). I can't find any solid statistics on outcomes, but it served me well. But it also requires thinking about high school as a place to get practical skills as opposed to a training ground for college (that most people in that town couldn't afford without going into massive amounts of debt anyway).

Are there opportunities they aren't taking advantage of?

Trust me, there was no lack of knowledge in that town about how to get free money. It just wasn't doing much to improve outcomes.

From what I can tell, Dems want to help those less fortunate.

I'm not questioning the motives of dems (and I don't think most people in this town does). I'm a libertarian and I caucused for fucking Bernie Sanders (because I think even though he's wrong on a lot of policies, his heart is in the right place). I'd prefer him to the face of the establishment or a bunch of religious hypocritical zealots. The problem with these policies though is not necessarily intent but the outcome. Have the decades of government handouts improved my home town? People there don't think so, so these poor working-class (with a high proportion of welfare recipients) voted for Trump. They just don't trust the government to help them. They need a way out, not generations of government dependents.

Yes, I know, this is still a lot of fluff. This is also just my first-hand account. I don't know the solution, but what we've been doing so far hasn't been working so well for these folks.

Already adjusting for this. To that end, my paycheck today was $135 less by correcting my exemptions. I'll probably still end up owing next year...
