I currently have a 1k pc power and cooling psu. How much would I gain if I got an thermaltake 1200w psu? Would it be worth the upgrade or no?

If indeed this is a serious question, then your system specs will have to be posted to be taken seriously. System specs, what you use your machine for, if you are overclocking, and how much of a load your system is on will be helpful information to post.

IMO, no. You've already got a very powerful and well built unit that should easily supply all but the most extreme of rigs. Is there some reason(s) that you want to replace your 1k?

well I am planning ahead for penryn octo core model. and the Dual 8950GX2's in SLI.

specs are in sig

Here is a little more in depth for specs

I have a PCP&C 1k psu. This might sound like a stupid question but would anyone be able to tell me if I am getting closer to the limit of this psu? I have 6 500gb western digital hdds, 2 7950gx2 video cards(sli), an evga 680i t1 revision board, qx6700 multi x11, ageia physx card, pci x1 esata card, pci-e x8 esata card, 10 120mm fans, 1 80mm fan, 2 ide dvd-dl drives, i card reader, AC Freezer 7 Pro, 4 sticks of memory each 2gb from ocz 800mhz,

I hope thats enough to narrow the answer down.

Geez dude, you don't fool around, do you! You should still be well within the acceptable limits for that PSU. As far as your future plans, you may be one of the few I've seen who could actually "need" a 1200 watter. There are meters that would allow you to gauge your total draw very accurately, though I'm not sure what they might be. Try to keep this thread towards the top, since I'm sure someone here knows what you can use.

My best estimate puts you around 450W-500W max load. I think you have some space leftover

No upgrade is necessary. People benching on LN2 (GPUs and CPU) are using 1kW units with quite a bit to spare on the 12V side. You won't be sweating that unit unless you take a more extreme route.

I personally know people doing fine with 2 x HD2900XT's clocked sky high on LN2 along with a Conroe. The said person uses a Zippy 700W for the GPU's and a Sparkle 550W for the CPU. This does not mean a 1kW unit won't suffice, but he was limited on the 12V with the Zippy (OCP kicks in).
