How much do Flat Panels reduce eye strain by?

I can't seem to find a conclusive, unbiased answer on google. I've used a flat aperture grille CRT (Diamondtron) monitor for years and can't discern any difference in the crispness of text on 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display by looking at it for a few minutes at Fry's Electronics. However, I've not sat in front of the sweetness for hours a day like I would. I've been squinting a lot for sometime now whenever I have to focus far away when I'm away from the computer; especially in wind. I do not feel I need glasses during the day, but my vision detoriates much at night when there is little light. I'm wondering if flat panels are worth the investment. Thanks in advance for any insight.

8 hours per day at work on a CRT is terrible on my eyes since I use a 18.1" LCD at home. If I stay at my current job, I feel as though I will be blind in no more than five years.

All I know is I went from a perfectly fine 19" flatscreen Trinitron-tubed CRT to a 17" 16ms-response LCD and my eyes no longer feel like they are bleeding after a long day. I still have both but the CRT is gathering dust. Plus the heat output is significantly lower which is another bonus.

YYMMV but I doubt it.

Where are you guys getting the figures? Anyone suffered/suffering from similar squinting symptons feel it lessen after upgrading to a flat panel? I admit I have not practice good ergonomics and focus far away every half hour or hour... Who in the world remember to do that on a regular basis?!

All I know is that since I have had my LCD for the last year, my eyes don't lock on focus to things that are two feet away so now nothing looks blurry when I get up to go get a drink.

What do you mean? You started excercising your eyes by looking at a distance--away from your display every hour or so--at the same time you got your LCD?

depends. a clueless n00b that runs his crt at 60hz all the time will think its way superior.

not to mention the clueless n00b that compares his new 500 dollar lcd to his emachines 50 dollar bundled crt

a person with a nice crt at 100+hz is going to be less impressed.

buy one of each, thats what dual monitor is for

Well, I use two LCD 's at work, stare at them practically all day (10-12 hours), and I do not ever get headaches etc., so I'd say LCD's are pretty good.

Let's also not forget that CRT's are basically huge electron cannons that are constantly bombarding your head with all sorts of EM radiation, while the only things you get from LCD's are photons.

I need to get me one, heh.

My current monitor is 15", so I'd probably be happy with a 15"... what are some things to look for in a good flat panel monitor?

perfect example here. a probably cheap and very old 17" tube vs a very expensive 19" lcd

Heck yes...no squinting now, but my previous monitor was a 17"-ish NEC dinosaur..this thing was HUGE. Very old...cabinet the size of a 21" or so, and a 17" screen..heh -- Planar 15" LCD now - about the same viewable screen size, and it's so much prettier...

I have no complaints about the 19" NEC Fe950+ I used to have, though (flat screen CRT).

I don't ever get headaches maybe because I keep myself around the recommended distance of 20" from the monitor. The radiation emitted by a CRT is really a very safe amount from what I've read and heard. However, I don't know if it's the constant flickering or what that causes the squinting. I have my refresh rate set at 85 Hz.

I have the 17" NEC Fe700. How would you compare the 19" NEC Fe950+ to the flat panel? Any noticable improvement? How many hours a day do you work in front of your computer? Thus, your squinting resulted from usage mostly on the 17"-ish NEC dinosaur or have you used the 19" NEC Fe950+ for a long time?
