But you then have to take out taxes, and malpractice insurance. Neurosurgeons have the highest malpractice premiums. An Emergency Neurosurgeon I heard about in the news made close to $1million a year, but after Uncle Sam and malpractice insurance got a hold of him, he only brough home $250,000. That was working an exorbinate amount of hours, so he quit because he could make the same or more with a lot less hours doing something else with his knowledge.

Yeah, they make on average I think around $200-300k or so. People forget about the whole malpractice insurance bit, and how much it actually costs. My step-father's a thoracic surgeon, and his malpractice is more per year than my mother makes...and she cleared nearly six figures last year.

Must be an Asian thing - my parents gave me Gifted Hands to read too, in the hopes that I'd become a doctor. I really respect that Ben Carson though, I saw an interview with him after that failed operation to separate the twins conjoined at the head and I thought to myself that he's exactly the type of doctor I would want to be operating on me.
