Yeah, a lot more places advertise it now than when I was in, you had to ask when you were checking out.

Look at the Over 40 columns under officers pay. "You're old, time to retire, retirement", things like that.

Good stuff.

BS

I got the Army College Fund and used up 98% during my four years of college. That money goes to paying tuition, books & living expenses. Very little was left over each month after the rent & tuition was paid.

I interned in the summers and worked part time jobs to help make ends meet.

Not as much as contractors make (or steal).

this is a much better calculator that includes housing allowances and that sort. an E-4 w/ 4 years of service makes about 40k, depending on location.

Also GI Bill is changing a lot starting Aug 09 (for the better) and now pretty much they pay the cost of tuition and the money you get to pocket is housing allowance check each month which is dependent on your cost of living in that area, so if your in California its probably about $1500/mo

I'm sold!

10% off, and all I have to do is dodge IED's, land mines, and the Taliban? Where do I sign up?

Actually, last year they passed a new MGIB which pays BAH according to where you live along with your monthly benefits. I'm lucky enough to come from Illinois, so I get free tuition and pocket about $1500 a month.

Actually, it's at like $36k now. Some soldiers got the GI bill and college fund. Mine works out to be almost $1500 a month as mentioned above.

Anyways, the pay isn't top notch, but the benefits definitely are. 27 months and I'll start getting paychecks again.

If you're going into the military for the money, you're going to find it's not enough.

I thought active duty going to a war/hazard zone also get a "combat pay" bonus. I swear my friend told me it's a fairly hefty chunk of money they give you if you're going to be in a hot zone.

You get a decent amount more plus your pay up to $80k is tax free. We went over 12 months and received an extra $1k for our last two months in country.

Yes it is. Plus, have you seen a federal retirement? Be fiscally responsible and $25k a year will be enough.

Sheesh, 10% off buying stuff was one example of other benefits they get. TallBill covered what I wanted to say nicely. My bro is in the Army, so I see a little of what goes on. Not to disrespect military folk, but they are compensated better than people think.
