You can say the same thing about any sport. Soccer, for example...Soccer is just learning how to run (which most of the world can do) around and kick a little ball around. It's not like the ball is really hard or anything. It's pretty easy to kick. No skill at all once you think about it.

There was actually an SI poll of athletes in the US and it asked what was the hardest thing to do in professional sports. What was the answer? How to hit a MLB fastball.

In addition, if it's so easy - why does it often require years for even the most gifted players out of high school to even make a significant impact? Because it requires honing your skills to ridiculous levels.

I like baseball because it actually does require a certain skill - you don't have to be the best in physical shape (although most have to be in good shape) but you have to have that certain skill. The biggest and strongest guy is nothing in baseball without the skill, which a smaller and shorter player could have.

Suppose, but that doesn't really make it interesting. Lets see an example, baseball legend steps up, pitcher knows he has a good swing, pitcher throws three foul balls (or whatever its called) and allows the batter to walk to base. Then the less known guy comes up, strike, strike, strike, more of a swing and hope kind of thing. Maybe I would say, yes it is skillful if they caught these fastballs about 70% of the time. But maybe that's just the impression I get.

Well what about soccer? I said this earlier before you took my unedited quote:

You can say the same thing about any sport. Soccer, for example...Soccer is just learning how to run (which most of the world can do) around and kick a little ball around. It's not like the ball is really hard or anything. It's pretty easy to kick. No skill at all once you think about it.

It's four balls (not foul balls). The situation that you're describing is not very strategic (which is also extremely important in baseball), except for a few great players. That very example has happened the past few years with Barry Bonds, who is one of the three greatest baseball batters to play MLB. However, usually the 'less known guy' is still a decently known player - that's how the batting lineup would just be arranged. The great player still gets plenty of chances though. It's not like he's intentionally walked every single time.

I could say the same thing about soccer, I guess. It's not very interesting to me either and I played it for over 8 years. To me, it would be incredibly boring to watch. It's just a bunch of guys running around 99% of the time doing nothing.

Sorry about the Hillsbrough incident, but I have no clue what that is, but I didn't mean anything in specific. People pretty much view European soccer fans as violent hooligans.
The Hillsbrough incident was in the 1980s (i think), when some croud troubles at Sheffied Wenesdays Hillsbrough ground Vs Liverpool go out of hand, and people got killed. A major incident in the history of football.

Can you play soccer? Can you curl the ball? Can you chip the ball? Can you do inch perfect passses over long ranges? Can you do step overs? Can you spin around other players with the ball? Can you header the ball? Can you slide tackle?
If you belive that soccer is just running and kicking, and is easy, then you are very mistaken. Its a very complex game, and you must have talent to play it.
Further more, its can be very tactical, and the moving around an doing nothing, aint nothing, cos asuming your refering to a defence/striker situation, where they are moving around each other; The defender is trying to prevent the striker getting the ball, while the striker is trying to get the ball and score.
Beliving so just shows your ignorance. All professional sports have a skill to it. None of them are easy. They are all complex in their own way, and require certain skills to play, otherwise we`d all be superstars!.

You throw a ball 60' 6" and get it inside a roughly 1.5'x2.5' box. Oh yeah, you better hope you can throw at least three different pitches and throw 90MPH+.
Want to play in the field? Catch the ball after someone hit that 90MPH+ pitch, and then you may have to throw it to first base to get the batter out.
Baseball involves skill, (and luck, just ask the Chicago Cubs ) just like any other sport. Some people like different sports than others. Just because a good number of Americans don't like to watch soccer\footy doesn't mean that nobody respects the skill that the game requires. Don't make irrational generalizations that you can't back up.

Oh, please tell me that you're kidding. You took my post completely out of context. It was a reply to a person saying that baseball had no skill because all you do is a hit a ball. I just said you could say the same thing about soccer. Soccer, like baseball, requires an incredible amount of skill.

And please see one of my previous posts regarding your statement that baseball is only a USA/Canada sport.

It already is a free-for-all. Way to take the high road out of the flamefest you started .

EDIT: I apologize for the post below this one, as well as the American public school system. Spell Porche right dammit!

I cannot answer any of your questions, but dont feel at all embarrassed out it. Soccer is, I hear, the most watch sport around the world, and that's just great, you people need some cheering up. You see, many of us live in America, and here there are different sports like football, basketball, and baseball. These sports are far superior to yours, just like our country. Here we spend most of our days lounging about our 4,000 square-foot floor homes, wondering what to invest in and telling the kids to put gas in the Porsh. No matter who we kill, we can say "we won!"

What are you talking about? Your initial argument was that baseball is only a US/Canada thing. I, along with some others, said it isn't. It's incredibly popular in the US, Canada, Japan, and many Latin countries like Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Cuba, etc.

Basically your initial statement was proven wrong. Now if you want to say that soccer is more popular than baseball on a worldwide basis, then I have no problem with that statement.

You bring a whole new meaning to arrogance there.
The sports are only superior in your eyes.
Your country is only superior in American eyes.

RabidMongoose.
My initial point was to see how how much the US knew about sports outside their borders, specifically soccer.
That point was changed, when you all decided to take insult to that.

Aye well, it's alot more than just running about. I specifically mentioned all the abilities you needed for baseball, on the other hand, apparently all you need to do is run for football. No wonder USA have such a crap team

Watch the upcoming champions league, or the barclay card premiership... you'll see then it is more than "running" about, I just keep getting the feeling americans just don't want to lose their traditional sports, so all they do is flame soccer (as they call it) saying it's boring. I dunno, I think you actually like watching commericals or players mostly standing around doing nothing.

I remember the worldcup was hosted in the USA in '94, thought that was complete BS imo. Most of the worldcup spectators then were peeps that flew into America from countries involved in the cup to watch their teams' matches. If americans don't care about soccer, I don't see a reason why the world should make them change idea by allowing them hosts.

I only know football is by far still the most popular sport in the world. For example, who cares if in one country the peeps that practice or follow baseball increase from 1000 to 2000 in one year, when in that same country the peeps that follow and practice football is counted in millions.

I've come to the conclusion that soccer does not need defending, it can stand all on its own

PS. I'm actually glad football isn't popular there, you guys would only "americanize" it.

I think that guy was just teasing you. Europeans tend to be very sensitive about their loss of dominance in many things (military, economic, cultural, etc.). I guess you took his bait.

In what way?
Apart from France & Germany, we dont claim anything in Military, Economic or otherwise.
As for cultural, thats not something you lose. European "ways" have been the same for centurys and will never change. You can`t lose Cultural.

Every country has sports that they are partial to.

Why does it matter that soccer is not very big in the US?

2 years ago as an European I went to see a pro baseball game (Giants stadium) on vacation in the USA

I don't know the rules but I enjoyed the game (and the hotdogs)
