The BBC tends to do that.
It covers it extensivly, but the fact is, 80% of the nation doesnt like playing or watching cricket. Its boring, and we allways know the results anyway, cos britians cricket team allways loses!

I cannot answer any of your questions, but dont feel at all embarrassed out it. Soccer is, I hear, the most watch sport around the world, and that's just great, you people need some cheering up. You see, many of us live in America, and here there are different sports like football, basketball, and baseball. These sports are far superior to yours, just like our country. Here we spend most of our days lounging about our 4,000 square-foot floor homes, wondering what to invest in and telling the kids to put gas in the Porsh. No matter who we kill, we can say "we won!"
You bring a whole new meaning to arrogance there.
The sports are only superior in your eyes.
Your country is only superior in American eyes.

RabidMongoose.
My initial point was to see how how much the US knew about sports outside their borders, specifically soccer.
That point was changed, when you all decided to take insult to that.

Do they not have sarcasm in third world countries?

SI's Sign of the Apocalypse.

"Moments after scoring the game-winning goal in a soccer match in Chile, striker El Rulo was shot in the shoulder by an opposing player!

I don't know the answer to a single question there. Not even "Oh I think I almost know this one" for a single one of them. But, then I don't know crap about American sports either. Sports are an opiat for the masses

And if you think that the cockny, scoser, brummy or manc accents are daft, then have you listened to how some inbred hicks talk in the US?
Hey, they aren't all inbred .

I actually read through the entire thread, hoping there were some decent posts...

a couple, but nothing spectacular...

It really irks me, when Americans say Soccer sucks, but it also annoys when Europeans say baseball sucks...

I'm from Eireland, spent half my life there, and go back there every 6-8 months... I love football (and footy is a snooty South Londoner term, ya wankers), and have played it most of my life, but I'm also infatuated with baseball, and had some minor success, playing for the St Catherine's Stompers in the NY-Penn league, before I blew my shoulder up...

the OP really came out swinging, and ended up kicking his own ass with his arrogance.. of course, some of the Americans on here were no better, so I guess tow Trolls make a right???

To put the questions in context, all the answers refer to huge footy teams and events, the questions are good ones - anybody who follows international football/soccer at least knows of Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, AC Milan, who Zidane and Beckham are, and didnt USA do well at the world cup. I bet a hell of a lot more people know of Man U than could point out Manchester on a map.

"(and footy is a snooty South Londoner term, ya wankers)" - er, no its not? in scotland its footy or "fitba".

AT forums suck so badly now. What an utterly sh!t thread, makes it all the worse that it's hardly even a bad example.

MaxDepth, a supporter from Highbury Library i see? I dont actually support MUFC, so dont bother trying to take the mick.
Arsenal have a good team, its just a shame that they`re made up of animals!. Your getting worse than the Leeds of old!. lol.
I see that grammar mistakes occur among "native" English-speakers as well

As for soccer, I really enjoyed the Women's World Cup--much more interesting than men's to me. Dunno why. I suppose traditional soccer fanatics like you have little respect for women's soccer--How much do YOU know about it?

(I also enjoy women's tennis more than men's tennis )

I believe that Americans have little penchant for soccer because there is less scoring. A fluke may lead a vastly outclassed team to win a match.

Well, maybe in the Higlands they call it Footy, but anytime I visit London, all the blokes in the South call it footy..., thus my conclusion...

And if i recall middle school, fitba is NOT pronounced footy... it's foot if I remember..

By "Americans", i mean no offence. So dont take any.
Answer the following questions, and when theres 5 or so answers, i`ll post the proper ones.
Point in this? Just curious.

1) Did the US qualify for the 2002 World Cup? and if so, how far did they get?
2) Who are the (Club) Champions Of Europe?
3) Name the current Champions of;
A) The English "Premier League"
B) The Spanish "La Liga"
C) The Italian "Seria A"
4) Who is Manchester Uniteds first choice keeper, and what nationality is he?
5) Name the most expensive midfielder in the world and the teams he moved from and too, with price(in pounds sterling).
6) Name the most expensive defender in the world, and the teams he moved from and too, with the price(in pounds sterling).
7) Who does "David Beckham" play football for?
8) Who are the current World Cup holders?
9) Who does "Theiry Henry" play for?
10) Who scored the Winner in the Champions League 2003 Final?

Answer away!

I'm a huge soccer fan.

1)Yes.. Quarters? Lost to germany on a bad call.
2)...
3)A) Man U
B) Valencia? or Deportivo
C) Juventus?
4)Fabien Barthez used to be, til American Tim Howard stole the spotlight
5) Midfielder: Zidane, right?
6) Defender: Roberto Carlos?
7) Moved from Man U to Real Madrid summer 2003
8) Brazil
9) Arsenal - best team eveeer!
10) Juventus won. Dont know who scored.

Some of those questions are kind of mundane. I know a ton about soccer but dont know the answers to all those.

maybe its just the blokes in north london who dont call it footy then

fitba is just "football" with strong scottish accent; but so often used and with specifically strong accent that it's more of a, er, colloquialism or something. There's plenty variations but its all the same theme - "football" in whatever dialect, pronouced something mroe or less alike "fitba". Im not in the highlands, Fifer tho lived in Edinburgh for 4 years while at Uni. Pretty much every briton i've met calls it footy or fitba, or both, and most furriners tended to pick up one or the other as the familiar term for it - including Amercians

The OP isnt some exam to test how much/little americans know about a "world sport" or something, everyone knows most americans care little for the sport (nothing wrong with that), OP is looking to see wether thats accurate or not, not prove how stupid and ignorant americans are for knowing little about it. In UK you'd only expect most of the answers to be known by a footy fan, though someone who pays attention to the sports bit of the news or reads the back pages of the paper could probably make good guesses for at least half. Sadly typical of the AT boards lately to see that so many people happily assume the worst possible motive, or more likely make a concerted effort to make it so, with absolutely no reason or justification to do so.
