They match up to 3% so I put 3% in per check. The funny thing is that most people at my work don't put in anything. As long as you put in what they match it's a 100% profit on investment immediately and the money comes out before taxes.

There are no such rules. If you're in a higher tax bracket a 401k is potentially favorable for tax-deduction; in addition, if you don't meet the MAGI rules you can't get the tax-deferrment benefits of a Roth, and you can't get the tax-deduction benefits of a Traditional IRA either.
