If it is a freind, nothing. If I don't know them, then it depends on what I am doing and how long it will take.

it is usually dependent on how stupid they are and how much money they have.

I usually don't help people with their computers, but if I do, it's always free of charge.

If possible I will try to get out of helping them out (in my experience once you fix something for someone, they will forever be at your door). If I do end up helping them and the job is easy/quick I usually charge about £10.

Used to ask a bottle of brandy for that, too, but currently I'm trying hard to lower my drinking habits...

For friends (repair/help): free -well at least no cash, food accepted - got freshbaked brownies for my last one
For friends (hardware purchase/replacement): Cost of hardware

For others (repair/help): $10/hr
For others (hardware purchase/replacement): 10% markup on parts, $10 per hour

If it's not in my town, I'll charge something for mileage but haven't had to yet.

When selling full systems, I normally just include the cost of parts + 10% markup. Now if the customer wants something fancy like a full install and config of a W2K/98 dual boot, then I'll charge something for the extra time.

$50/hour... before I started charging that much I got phone calls up the ying yang. Now people think twice about asking me stupid questions. Some people still go through with the $50/hr service though. I will happily oblige if they are going to pay that. I used to have 20 or so people who would call me on a regular basis now it's mostly friend and family... I don't to help them anymore, but there isn't much I can do there.

I usually get all I can drink while I'm there. If it's long enough that we get hungry, I usually end up getting some free pizza. Can't complain about that.

How much do you charge to help people with anything? It ain't particularly helpful to charge 'em anything at all, is it? :disgust:

I help them hoping they'd help me in return on something else.

Friends = nothing (a few drinks are usally appreciated though), i don't like to charge friends because then when it goes wrong again i get the blame and people say well i paid you to do a job and it isn't working again (usally because they have done somthing stupid though)

Other people = depends how rich they look, usally no more then £50, but i might offer to take their old hardwear off there hands or somthing like that in return if buying a new system

$0.00, they buy the parts or reimburse. I was suprised last time I worked on a friends machine. She had an old P133 she wanted to give her daughter/grandkids for a word processor/browser combo. I figured the kids needed a machine so I helped out. The friend gave me a $50.00 certificate to a nice restraunt.

I've never actually came out and said right upfront, im charging you so and so dollars to fix your computer. I just fix it to the best of my abilities (one time a hard drive died) and I accept whatever they give me in return. One time it was a dinner, another it was $40.
