Only about $4k. Roth 401k at age 24. I stupidly waited until the start of this year to contribute, which was 7 months after starting work. During that time I was missing out on 6% 1:1 match.

I only do the 6% now. I have enough savings now that I either need to up my contribution, invest otherwise, or pay off student loans more quickly.

How would one go about finding this information? There a simple way though a website or do I have to go through my employer?

HR should be able to provide you with the brokerage website.
or ask a co-worker that's been there awhile.
you new to the company?

Roughly $28K in several accounts. I'm 27, contributing 15%+4% to the 401K, plus maxing my Roth IRA every year. Got a late start relative to my age due to dragging my ass through college. Given the ol' 8% standard return, I should have plenty to retire on even if I never get another raise in my life. *Knock on wood* I also have roughly that much in non-sheltered investments. I make a modest salary but try to live very frugally with the exception of my cars and where I live.

I've been trying to advise my coworkers against screwing themselves in the ass, but they are all running from their 401ks and STOPPING contributions because the market fell. I tell them to buy low so they can sell high, but emotions run deep.

Wife and I are close to 6 digits when you combine them. I'm 31, she just turned 29. It's better than a lot of people, but still less than I'd like to have. She didn't start working her first "real" job until she was almost 26. But the pay after 7 years of college + Residency help catch up a little quicker.

We've also got a small pension plan through our employer that helps cover some bills when we retire. Should amount to an extra $800-$1200 a month per person on top of our own retirement savings. Nothing huge after 30 years of inflation, but at the least should cover some bills or provide fun money.

32K / 28 yrs old

Gonna start a Roth IRA and max it out by the end of the year though, so it will hopefully be about 40K / 28 yrs old by the time 2010 starts.

Yeah, I have a little pension plan too. I generally don't think much about it, since I'm not very confident on the chance of actually getting paid out in 35-40 years. (Even less confident than I am about ever getting any Social Security money.) But hey, if I actually get anything out of it, then that will be a nice little bonus.

I'm 25, wife is 24.

15k in my 401k.
1k in her 403b.
Low teen-thousands in an ESOP.

We both need to start saving more for retirement. Thankfully my wife gets a pension in another 29 years (teacher).

You put $500/mo into 401K?

For a 22 year old do you think it's too high or to low?

He's smart. The earlier that you start contributing big numbers the more benefit he will see in the long run.

For the past 5 years, I've contributed over $600 per month into my 401k. I'm 30.
