I haven't read the thread and won't say how much I have, but I had a 16% return in the last 3 months. Is the market really dong that well? I haven't payed that much attention lately.

Last I checked, it was around 100k (33 years old)
I have an IRA but I've had to correct some spending mistakes I made in the recent past, so I won't be contributing to them for another year.

Company match up to 6% and my company does profit sharing which has helped my contributions.

I'm 37.

I don't have a 401K, but I've got 8 years vested in a pension so far.

I've also got $54K in IRAs.

And $18K in savings.

At the beginning of 2008, had $75,000 in the 401k. At the end, $59,000. I don't know what it is at the moment, but it certainly hasn't recovered that much. Have about $90k in savings, $30k in IRA, another $20k in stocks. Need to do something with those savings. I'm 30.

49, $210K single.

Make that $211, gold had a good day yesterday. The last year was hell on my portfolio, I'm in a defensive position now, bonds, some equities, cash & gold, missed the recent nice run up of the DOW, but I'm not in a trusting mood.

:Q
how/when do u plan to retire?

First of all, who knows at what age we will be retiring in 30 years. Secondly, as I've seen friends loose a ton of money in their 401ks lately, I've been able to manage my investments myself and come out way head. This year alone, I've been able to make $80k in the markets and did not loose the typical 40-50% last year. People seem to lean on their 401k as their retirement crutch and many will be shocked when it's not close to enough in 40 years.

There are many academic studies out there demonstrating that the majority of personal and professional investors end up losing to the market in the long term after fees and on a risk-adjusted basis if they try to trade actively and time the market.

Most people would be best served by buying and holding a collection of cheap index funds.

$1,000 @ 22 yrs. (2 months since I started working)

You put $500/mo into 401K?

For a 22 year old do you think it's too high or to low?

If you can swing it, i'd invest more now. compound interest will carry you quite far down the road.

i didn't know 401k's accrued interest. i thought they were basically mutual funds.

potatoe, potato, compounding interest or compounding gains, call it what you will. same difference over the long term as investments can be viewed as percentile gains over original investments.

Meh....currently hovering around 68k. Between Roth, work 401k, and previous employer 401k.

I'm 31 and use to put in 9% towards my retirement up until a year ago...but cant afford it anymore.

I am 25, wife is 27. No investments and $8,000 cash (after I get paid on the 5th). We are a single income family with a child. She is trying to finish college.. I have this weird feeling that I will be broke for the rest of my life.

Low teen-thousands in an ESOP.

We both need to start saving more for retirement. Thankfully my wife gets a pension in another 29 years (teacher).

that fucking teacher's pension is the shit. my mom gets 80% of her salary (based on her last contract) when she retires.

EDIT: Me - $0, age 20. I plan on contributing right out of college as soon as I can.

Just turned 31, have 53,000 in 401k and 23600 in Roth, total 73,600.

My wife has a teacher's pension that will pay $2500 / mo (today's dollars) at age 55 if she retires and goes up the longer she works, that thing is gravy, has a net present value of like 500k.

The last 2 years of maxxing 401k and Roth have really pumped up the value, and the stock market from March on has put it on steroids. I've been lucky.
