Actually it probably does not hurt to have a small stash of cash somewhere. Like let's say all electronic banking and transaction systems went down for like a week or two due to some kind of huge disaster, it would come in handy to have money as cash. Utilities etc are still going to expect to get their payment.

A utility that cut people off during a 1-2 week national crisis (which is what all banking and electronic transactions shutting down would be) would be slaughtered. A mailed check would have to be sufficient and if they can't cash it because their system is down, too bad for them. Realistically they'd have to deal with a grace period to catch back up once the systems were online again.

On the flip side though you might need cash to buy food and such, that is a good reason to have cash on hand.

money to me is safer at home than in the bank where it is readily accessible.

having to go home to get money to pay for something really eliminates buyers remorse giving you time to think.

No savings account, all money goes towards maxing 401k and leftovers go into a Vanguard brokerage. I just keep enough in checking to pay the bills each month.

I have a savings account that offers 1.05%, plus a few perks. The rest I keep in short term stocks/bonds. Trying to save up enough for a downpayment on a house, probably have enough at this point but don't really see anything I'm interested in buying.

After that, IRA and 401k.

I think utilities would be unable to receive payments, if not be totally disrupted if this was an internet issue.

I'd be more worried about food and stuff like that.
