I couldn't hear any of them and I panicked until I realized I had the speakers on my laptop muted.

I could hear the 8K clear as a bell, could kind of hear the 10K, and the 12K was more or less just a faint noise...not really heard, more felt. After that, they annoyed my cat, but I didn't hear a thing.

Do NOT trust tones through a non certified instrument to rely on your upper aural capabilities! Get an audiogram through a licensed audiologist.
Notebook speakers should be capable of producing ultrasonic frequencies. Heck the small parts on large woofers act as whizzers and get into the 15k range easy. This is why they are LPF'd because the excursion from lower frequency output will modulate the unwanted HF for starters...
Most PC sound cards are full of distortion that's easily revealed on high frequency sinus tones. In addition the natural rolloff that occurs with human hearing tempts the listener to increase the volume setting which can drive the output into clipping which is very audible and can be mistaken for hearing an effectively inaudible fundamental particularly with inexperienced listeners.
You fools, they're testing the population to see what kind of sounds will be effective on us!!! DON'T DO IT! AAAaaaaaaaahhhhhh
