As little as possible. Most goes to high yield savings. I don't worry about accidentally withdrawing more than is in the checking acct as I have set it up to so that if it does go negative it just draws on a line of credit.

Broke college kid = can't possible imagine needing 3-5k. Absolutely unfathomable.

I'm going to get up, walk downstairs and hand a check to my landlord, and have a little under 50 bucks in my account.

After my paycheck gets deposited, I'll have about 200 to last me the week. Cereal and cheap beer. Yay. LOL.

I pay for everything with a credit card for the rewards. I can't think of a scenario where I would need $5000 in cash immediately or otherwise. I mean, I'm not a drug dealer or in the mafia.

How often do you need cash in those amounts? Just use a credit card and then immediately arrange a transfer from your savings account to your checking account.

We know what our expenses are every month. We don't have any surprises. Should any emergencies arise, we can transfer from our Emergency Fund/Savings to our checking in 2 days. If needed sooner, which I can't imagine a situation like this, we'd use a CC.

I keep it at a steady 5k, anything over that gets swept into a money market account. I don't really need that much but the wife likes to see that. She has one of those "safety glands" that twitches when it gets below that, so rather than fight her about it I just do that and she stays happy.

I have what used to be a fairly high interest savings with Citibank, where I also have my checking account. Instant transfer of funds if need be.
