We live in a nice tiny town 25 miles from work by county road on an AFB outside of grand forks nd. I like my job feeding the air force and only wish they communicated better and ate something better than chicken strips and fries. We live in a culinary desert filled with McDonald's babies. Sad.
Do they at least have honey mustard there?

Low 80's, upstate NY, Sysad. 9-5, virtually no off-hours work, decent COL (though not cheap enough for me to be in hog-heaven). Beats the pants off my previous work (govt sector).

Interesting to see the results with the highest votes in 90-130K area. That's about right for IT sector for most engineers.

I'm an IT consultant, NJ, 140-150k depending on OT. I get to work home 1-2x a week. Out by 5pm everyday. Let's see how long this job lasts.

Does this mean that your conversion to being a regular employee hit a snag?

Low 80's as a Land Use Planner/Acting Development Coordinator for the County. If things go right and I actually get the Coordinator position, I'll top out at mid 90's eventually.

Brianmanahan says he makes 5 figs doing "a side job." perhaps he can offer advice on how to get started in that arena?

Around 110k. Live in Manhattan. I am poor by those standards. Luckily I am not married and my son is 23 and makes his own $$$.

It'd be nice if you include the location for cost of living and include any special perks.

What does an IT consultant do? Do you have knowledge in Linux or Unix-like OS's, cloud computing and cyber security?

My current job is to make rich people richer. And after I do that I make the Fed richer with taxes. It's really a great all American job. Guess what I do for 25 cookies. LOL!

If you lived in that god awful silicon valley, your salary may go up +100% if that. But your home price will go up 83649%.

My friend lives in a standard 2000sf home with 3bd in a completely ordinary suburb of San Jose.

That home is 1.8 million. Unreal.

Does he have like an acre of land? My 4000 sqft house in a gated San Jose Country Club with a hillside view is less than that

I have spent years working in the defence industry in canberra, australia. Currently I am embedded at army HQ as a civilian contractor. I make 6 figures as a software development type. I don't get paid holidays and have no job security at all. So I keep a cardboard box and will work for food sign handy. Although I should hopefully be out of defence in the next couple of weeks (fingers crossed). Having to maintain a security clearance is a monstrous pain in the arse.

Because if I lose it for whatever reason e.g. collaborating with the russkis then I won't have a job any more. ;-)

I love this forum it's so braggadocios.

What you make don't matter, it's location - see where you really stand here (it's old but prob still close) -- http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/01/15/business/one-percent-map.html
So I'm top 5% by household in my region... This leaves me wondering how so many people afford luxury cars when I consider our house having a single $550/mo car payment borderline unreasonable. Okay, I'm not really wondering, I know the answer. FFS people, stop leasing cars you can't actually afford! Whatever, I suppose we spend a little too much eating out, a little too much on alcohol, and definitely way too much on travel.

I think retirement savings suffers a lot. We have friends who have moved up job ladders fairly quickly and their spending ramped up to match their incomes. Their retirement savings? Barely budged. Sometimes I think about how things might be different if we didn't save so much for retirement - but its not like we're living a deprived life and I think I'll probably like retiring at 52 or so. We'll be done paying off my wife's student loans in the next couple of years (~12 years early) so maybe we'll increase our spending a little then
