Thanks for all the replies. I got into a debate with someone who said that anyone who spent more than $20 a month on internet was silly. I said that I would pay $100/month for a super fast connection. Then I got to thinking that I don't see the point in paying over $30 a month for TV, but I wanted to know what others paid.

I still don't see a point in having a landline.

I was talking on the cell about a month ago. Right as the battery died, I started choking. I realized that I had no way at all to call for help if I needed it.

I want to get a landline installed now.

So you panicked, and forgot where to plug the cell phone in?

Most cell phones I've had in the past 5 years need about 10-20 minutes of charging before they will turn back on.

Really? The iPhone is the only one that I've had that takes about 5 minutes to come on if you totally kill the battery. Every other phone I've had comes on within a minute once plugged in.

Oh god, my iPhone is the worst.

After the battery dies, it takes 10 minutes to charge up and then you have to reactivate it with iTunes.

You shouldn't have to reactivate it with iTunes, at least I've never had to. How long are you leaving it totally dead? I only totally kill mine about once every other month. Even then it's only that way for about 5 -10 minutes or so. When I get the 10% warning, I either stop using it & save what's left for a possible incoming call if I'm on the road, or I plug it in.

I've never had to reactivate either. I've only had my iphone 3G for about a month now but i've let it die completely about 3 or 4 times already though.

Dish makes the PAL DVR, which records OTA digital broadcasts. You can get TV Guide data for up to 6 days, if you live near a CBS or PBS affiliate that broadcasts it. They've worked out the kinks with the latest firmware. The only issue at this point is you can only record 30 hours of HD content.

As for me, I pay $60 for basic landline and regular DSL; I don't really download anything, so I've been considering saying another $12 by downgrading to DSL Lite; this will be the second time I've down-graded lately, as due to stupidity on the part of their CSRs, they switched me to DSL Extreme six months ago without my permission, and I didn't realize it until now. I also pay $30/mo for a 125 minutes cell plan through Verizon.

Comcast - $60.36 - The only form of HS Internet available here.

Comcast Cable Television 15.99
Comcast High Speed Internet 42.95
Taxes, Surcharges & Fees 1.42
It was cheaper than just Internet while the promotion lasted. Now that it's expired, I could save a few bucks going to just Internet. I'd probably have to pay to have the trap changed out on the pole though.
----------------------------------------------------------
Dish - $86.71

DishDVR Advantage Classic Silver 200 - You Saved $0.98! 57.99
3 Premium Package 31.00
Duo Receiver - (You Saved $5 With DishDVR Advantage!)
Apr 03 DishDVR Advantage Credit - Adjustment -3.00
Apr 11 State/Local Tax (Sales/Gross Receipts) 0.72
They just dropped the bill $3 out of the kindness of their hearts. One of the premium packages is HD. I should ditch HBO and stick with just Showtime but there's a savings when you bundle them. BTW, I have 200 channels and watch maybe, 10. You know how it goes.
----------------------------------------------------------
Verizon - $47.44

That's a 12 month average. I'd like to switch to VOIP, but Comcast is too expensive, and none of the other providers allow me to keep my phone number (last time I checked). Comcast VOIP would be no savings for me.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I use a tracfone. A little over a $100 lasts me a year. My wife's cell is paid for by her work.

FIOS triple freedom for $95 + $20 in taxes = $115 which sucks. I have an appointment with Cablevision to return to them for $85 after taxes for same, if not better, packaging. They say since they are not a phone company, they are only charging tv taxes. The only way FIOS is better is their HD picture quality. We don't watch enough tv to care. I'm glad FIOS came into play though because competition has really straightened out Cablevision's offerings, including no contract required.

30/5 internet
tv with no premium movie channels
unlimited phone
===========
$85 total

Boomerang, have to checked Vonage lately? The fact that I could port my number is why I went with them. If you decide to try them, pm me, and I'll tell you how to add another 2 months free.

$0.

I don't have a landline. I use digital TV converter box and rabbit ears. Technically I have a 6 hour/month 56k modem account at $0/month, but I don't use it.

$90/mo for all 3. Fios promotion, just locked in another year.

20/5 internet
land line w/ verizon freedom package (no idea what that is, it was cheaper to take the package with it than without, i dont even have a phone hooked up to it)
hd extreme package w/ multi-room DVR and one extra SD box

It's going to cost me about 120 in a year. At that point, I'll either take the next promotion, or drop the landline ($45/mo) and go back to 10/2 internet.

Landline = $50
Internet = 6.0 DSL for free (I work for the ISP)
Sat. TV = $85

So, about $135/month.

I have found that you can just take their newest promotion, which always seems to be an improvement, no matter where you are at the current one. If you get a flyer for non-customers that says it now comes with a free DVR, free movie channels or sports pkg, you can call to have that applied to you with the only downside being your contract is extended another year. But you are saving X amount more every month and may get extra services. Like I said above though, their taxes add a ton to the bill.

Cell phone coverage isn't always available.

If you own a home, aren't most utilities & other "life" services tied to a phone number? Do you just give them your cell? We actually have 4 lines sharing 500 minutes ($22 ea. after taxes) so it would require us to pay a lot more for a new cell plan anyway - having the bundled landline pkg isn't that bad.

Going to be getting Comcast soon and the bill is looking like this:

Internet/Basic Cable = $80/month

No landlines, as me and the roommate both have cell phones.

No POTS line.

No cable/satellite TV.

1.5 mbps ?dry? DSL is $20/month + taxes.

I am long past my days of wasting hundreds of dollars a month on "must have" services that I didn't use.
