How many of you have actually experienced 'African-American culture' in the United States?

And how many of you simply saw a rap video and indicted an entire race because of it

There's a big difference between being a realist and a racist.

There's a big difference between being a realist and a racist.

My old high school was located in an area pre-dominated by low-income families. It was a high school where they established an IB program to attract smart kids and have them mingle with kids from the local neighborhood. Many of these low-income kids were either black or hispanic.

One time after school, while I was waiting in the bus, I saw a confrontation between two kids: one white and one black. The black kid called the white kid a beloved patriot/cracker for some reason, and the white kid shot back by calling the black kid the N-word. Another of the black kid's friends jumped in and called the white kid a racist.

At this high school, I've also encountered many black kids immitating thug life. At the same time, I've encountered many other black kids who truly work hard and were willing to earn the grade. It is these latter group of people that I hope most people would portray the black population. Unfortunately, we still have a lot of work to do.

I still see people being racists everywhere. When me and my friends went snowboarding, we walked by an SUV with kids in it. One of them yelled out chinks. I wonder where they learned that from? =/

Also, my gf went to Las Vegas for spring break, a guy actually went up to one of her friends and started saying "Ching chang chong".

all perpetrated by "white" people. I really don't get the point of it.

I went to LR Central High School (site of the integration crisis) and the area surrounding it is basically the ghetto now. The school is about 60% black, if not more. I've seen plenty of black people who simply put forth no effort in high school and are content in being relegated to the normal classes. In my AP classes there were 2 or 3 black people at most out of a 30 person class. Now, am I racist for putting forth my own observations? I don't think so. However, you have to be kidding yourself if you don't think there are white kids who make HS out to be a huge joke and don't take it seriously a la the black people you mentioned. I knew plenty of white kids who didn't do sh!t in all of HS and guess what...mommy and daddy were there to help 'em out.

Obviously, this is a problem...but how do we come to a solution? How many black kids were steered out of pre-AP/AP classes by counselors who didn't think the kid could succeed? How many black kids at my school didn't get enough to eat at dinner? I was lucky, I had an amazing home enviroment that fostered my education...how many black people grew up in a similar environment? Can you simply blame the individual while overlooking other factors?

I think every individual has a chance, definitely not an equal chance though, to succeed in life. It is an oversight, though, to deny the existence of a problem in our society. Race does matter, people just won't admit it.

I'm of Southeast Asian decent, and I've also encountered similar racists remarks. When I was in 7th grade, my friend, who is Chinese, was punched on the arm out of the blue by this one kid, who looked Italian/White. The kid told my friend that the punch was for Pearl Harbor. At the same time frame, we were at a store doing grocery shopping. A black lady who was driving in front of the store entrance told us to open our slanted eyes wider next time so we can see where we were going.

I understand that there are many ignorant people in the world, and one way to combat this is to present one's self as if one is representing an entire group. That's why I always try to carry myself in a manner that will allow people to have a positive view of myself because I know that by doing so will allow some of them to see that not all of "my kind" are bad.

oh, wait, I guess you think a black person can't be racist???

If she didn't make the ignorant comment in the first, we wouldn't even be having this discussion now, would we???

Did your response change the fact that you made an assumption about the lady?
and
Where did I say racism had a race requirement?

As you so eloquently put it 'Reading comprehension for the win!!!'

I don't know...are they?

I really don't see how this changes the fact that you made an assumption regarding how the lady would react. But I wasn't being that serious in the first place, let's drop it.

This thread only adds to the problem of our current state. Especially the way the OP phrased his title.

I'm kind of disappointed in some of the members here. The statistics and general concepts of cultures may be true, but the phrasing and just shear disrespect for others is saddening.

The thread was titled in a way to mimic the thoughts of someone who feels that there's a good chance that a group of people are involved with the incident based on related news articles released by the media. You're looking at it with a close-minded perspective.

An art teacher, who is black, I once had showed us a picture that he took with his ex-girlfriend. The picture was a top view of them in bed having sex. He titled the picture N*gger Lover. He told us that in his experience most people would label his girlfriend as such instead of him being labeled "White Girl" lover. In essence, he felt like that by labeling his girlfriend instead of him, those people completely denied his existence and only referred to him in third person instead of acknowledging him directly.

The title of his artwork caused a lot of debate to the point where one of the students complained to the college administration, and the teacher was suspended. The other students including myself protested the next day, and two hundred of us stormed the administration building demanding that the decision be re-considered.

My point is that the title may seem racist to you, but it is merely a way to incite some responses to get the opinions of others and to, hopefully, understand the situation some more.

Whoa there, who said anything about it being racist? Please don't throw that word around as it's being used improperly in too many cases nowadays.

I'm merely pointing out the fact that your title is loaded and it doesn't help the current state of affairs. But to be fair, it could have been almost neutral and some would still find ways call you out on it.

But like you said, the title served its purpose and here we are discussing it in a civil manner. I'm not saying you are racist and others who think you are have their head in the sand, but what I am saying is there are other ways of addressing this issue more eloquently.

Now to answer your questions in the OP. I'm guessing you think this way because this is what is fed to you. This is what you see on TV and maybe in real life. I'm going to assume that it's partly based on truths and partly based on what you, the viewer wants to see on TV. What we encounter in our small day to day lives or even what we see on the tube, what we discuss with others and the lingering stereotypes all add a little bit to our paradigm of what we call reality.

Our biases and life experiences thus far shape our views. And since we as humans make life easier by categorizing events, people and color, this is what we're left with.

Never occurred to you that socioeconomic status may be a bigger factor than skin color, did it? Nah, easy explanations are where it's at, which coincidentally explains the prevalence of religion as well as racism.

Black is, as Black does. Sounds corny, for sure.....but, they have stereo typed themselves.

You see every race, of immigrants coming to this country. You don't see any of them doing anything, really, but trying to work hard to achieve the American Dream, which most do. Many of them are just happy to be here. Many will wash dishes at first...but soon they learn, and find some success. It is not unusual to see an Asian, who just 5 years ago, arrived in this country with only a few hundred dollars in his / her pocket. Fast forward 5 years, and they own a profitable business, living in the same neighborhoods as you, sending their children to the same schools as you.

Why, do we have generations of Black people living here, who are still on welfare?

I just don't get it. :disgust:

Hi, David Duke. Bolded the relevant part of your post, figure it out on your own. It's time to PM a mod, I'd suggest getting together in rural Kentucky, or wherever you people are from, and having a good ole' nappy headed hoe-down, I'm sick of reading it here.

yep, I think like you...
I used to live in Tulsa, and when I first noticed it happened in Tulsa and saw it was a black person, I knew it happened in North Tulsa, so I looked up the address, yep.
Likewise if you said this happened in North Tulsa, I'd assume it was a black person.

Well, so far the black population hasn't been responsible for the colonization & exploitation of indegenous civilizations, starting off World War 1 & II and responsible for Celine Dion ... so I'll give them this one.

It's a BLACK neighbourhood, who were u expecting to come out and protest? Eskimos?
