I always go chin over bar, otherwise it's cheating

I need to get a bar and start doing these more. Last I tried was last summer and I got 11 (175 pounds) but this was on the ski bar on a boat which was quite thick, my hand discomfort was more than muscle discomfort.

Plus I need to get in pull-up shape so I can beat my 9 year old. He had the highest pull-up count, most situps, and fastest mile time for his school last year.

I’m 160. I do 4 sets of 7/8 strict chinups after my bench pressing. I suspect I can do 10 strict chin-ups when fresh. Not sure about pull-ups, never do them. I probably should incorporate them in.

Side note: for months, every other workout would finish with three sets of chin-ups to failure. I had a tough time making gains, although at times I was gaining weight so I actually was doing more work with the same number of chin-ups. Now, I picked a number which I can do 4 sets of, and every workout I try to add one. So I did 5,5,5,5. Next workout: 6,5,5,5. Next: 6,6,5,5. Always adding one. I’ve made much more gains doing this than when I tried to failure, and I’m up to 8,7,7,7.

bw 90kg morning weight, 93kg when actually training in the evening

video of 15+ over hand with no kipping!

Pull ups 13 over hand, shoulder width grip, none of this kipping BS. I'm sure I could smash out more with kipping but it wouldn't mean jack as thats not why I do pull ups

12 in video,

lol @ 25-30 chin ups!

Chin ups: 16

I've rarely seen anyone do 20 strict pull ups. Yeah I've seen videos on youtube, most with less then perfect form, but a few with perfect form.

Technically, you are kipping slightly with your hips on those pullups Watch them extend and flex, extend and flex. Kipping is part of normal biomechanics. It's very weird doing a pullup with muted/fully extended hips for all reps. They're very challenging.

As for me, I haven't tested my pullup endurance lately. I'll prolly try to do a max test as part of my workout training for the chinup contest.

I weigh about 230lbs and I can almost do 4. :awe:

I just got a pullup bar for home use though and I'm trying the Grease The Groove method. I'm actually only recently up to 4 after being at only 1 for a long time. It's definitely a lift I've neglected due mostly to my inability to do any from the get-go. The lat pull-downs on the machine are hardly a substitute, either.

I'd really just like to be able to do about 10 to 15.

I actually prefer lat-pull-downs.
Weighted Pull-ups are difficult for me because of the height of the pullup-bar in my gym so i replaced them with lat pull-downs.
The movement is nearly the same.

It's similar, but you don't get the proprioception of your body moving. Also, it's a bit easier to cheat with lat pull downs since you can hyperextend your back and utilize the power from that to complete the movement. There are many ways to overcome pull up bar height problems. It's easiest to just take a heavy dumbbell and stand it up on its side. It's an easy-make stair.

I weight 155. To my surprise, I participated in a marine pull up event and tied the record. I got 24 pronated grip pullups (no kip at all), 2 extra supinated grip chinups, and 1 crappy kip chinup (they counted 26 reps out of 27). I estimated that I could get about 15, but due to the skinny nature of the bar and the speed with which I completed the reps, I guess I got more. I may try to get a video up sometime soon to compare my results on thicker bars.

I noticed that in your video. You were way up there

Yeah, strong lats. The higher you go the stronger you are, but it isn't productive to maximising numbers for reps...

185lbs
first set: 10
second set: 9
3rd set: 5

I used to not tire out as fast

Out of shape.

My 2nd and 3rd sets are A LOT less...but I don't do any stamina training...

Size of the bar has no real effect mate. Unless it's very thick but then it would be a lot harder! Speed doesn't matter as long as you start with your arms and shoulders fully extended

Grab a video mate. I want to see AT'ers pull ulps!

How much do you weigh?

I think I remember seeing a pic of you and you don't look anywhere near 195lbs...unless your 6'1-6'3 tall.

Kipping would be a driving of the hips. These are not kipping. I got a video of Saturday that'll upload tomorrow. I just tried to keep my hips forwards and not use my legs/ hips to drive up like in a kip.

Kipping is not really part of normal biomechanics like a crossfit kip. Your hips moving a bit is not kipping like a kipping pull up.

Anyone with 15+ strict is a solid figure on pull ups!

How much do you weigh?

70kg (154 lbs)

I`m training my lats with lat-pull-downs (90kg x5 x3). No BW Pullups atm in my training routine.

The dumbbells in my gym aren't usable in that way

I used a smith machine for weighted pullups (finally something, the smith machine is good for ) but in my gym the smith machine is in heavy use by other lifters ( sadly -.- )

Well, the bars CrossFitters typically do pullups on are very thick (probably 2 inches in diameter). Those are the bars I use for nearly everything. I've noticed that when I go back down to a normal pullup bar (1-1.5 inch diameter), I can get a whole lot more. I may try to take a video of me on each to compare to the differences. I think this may be where I give some credit to my eccentric body weight pullups along with my assisted one-arm pullups.

I'm actually just teasing you, man. Your's aren't an official kip, but a pullup does entail a "sort of" kip, unless you actively keep your hips muted (extended). Your pullups look great though. I just like to give you a hard time every once in a while. It makes me feel better about not being able to get a 200kg+ total in Olympic lifts

5'10", 158lbs give or take. (Depending on water intake that day and how much I sweated out previously)

Chins - chin up over bar, back down to a dead hang - about 12-15.

Pullups - same criteria above but wide grip - about 12-13.

A massive improvement over the 2 I could barely squeeze out when I first joined the gym back in college. All of my lifting nowadays tends to be to maintain size. People tell me I need/should lose some muscle mass as I don't look like the typical runner, but I'd prefer not to be beanpole skinny.

210lbs, 2 strict pullups or 3 strict chinups. (6'1" height)

As a freshman in college @175lbs I could do 20+. Now I've got a beer belly and have lost a lot of strength. I'm starting to work out more though, so hopefully in a year or so I'll be at 185lbs, running 6 minute miles and pulling 10+ strict pullups.

Interesting.

The crossfit guys I see use bars taht are about 1-1.5" but I haven't gone to any CF gym in years/ if ever.

My bro and mate does them fully extended pretty bolt straight. I'll upload the videos tonight when I get home. No training tonight, REST.

200kg+ isn't that much when you weigh 90kg! But C&J 2x bw is...SOMEDAY man

It's a big increase mate! Congrats!

What distance do you run? My mate does some OLifting for his 800M. He's a masters runner and clocks in a respectable 1:56.
