WOW is this an old thread!

285-290 3-4 but with my shoulders I'm amazed I can get any. Just lifting my arms up to grab the bar is painful AF.

70kg (154 lbs)
I used a smith machine for weighted pullups (finally something, the smith machine is good for ) but in my gym the smith machine is in heavy use by other lifters ( sadly -.- )

The Smith machine was a godsend for me. Having the ability to continue to train my chest and tris while rehabbing my shoulder it was the only thing that kept me in the gym. To say that there is no use for a Smith machine is just wrong. I continue to use it today because it allows me to build muscle while keeping my shoulder inline and out of pain. I have 2 heavy days a month when I use the flat bench, the other 6 chest days are on the smith. The smith is also great for drag curls, one leg squats and a host of other exercises.

Today I weigh 150lbs, max pullups I've ever consecutively done is 43. I was probably about the same weight at that time though I'd have to go back and check my logs to know exactly.

I don't have a video of the 43, but some time prior I jad a friend video me and I think i got 39 on it iirc. This would've been after a squat workout and probably 2 or 3 deadlift sets of moderate weight. Yes these are not dead hang but they are straight up and down.

Bodyweight pullups are too easy for me so I always do them with at least 45lbs around my waist.

Those are not really pullups.

5'9, ~170 - I can bang out around 20 dead hang pullups though I usually do weighted pullups - I'm up to 65lbs.

Agreed. Pull up should be to full dead hang / arm extension. It's like doing quarter depth squats or bench press where you don't actually go full depth. I'm sure it has a use in building strength but really limits the benefit. Impressive nonetheless.

Yeah, I posted the video knowing full well that most likely that would be the only thing said.

I have a challenge for those of you with criticism of it though:. Try doing a max rep set like that and see how many more you can do. I bet it's less than you think.

Also, I rarely do bodyweight pull-ups and instead do my sets with 45 to 70lbs hanging from my waist, and those are slower and more controlled. However, I still don't typically let the scapula flare out at the bottom as I believe that would put stress into my shoulder supporting muscles/tendons.

A couple years ago a bit after this video I decided to see how many consecutive sets of 15 I could do before failure. I rested 2 minutes iirc and did something stupid like 13 or 14 sets before I could no longer get all 15. After the 7 or 8th set I realized I should've done 20 reps each set bc I would be there all day.

Doing an exercise your way for a long time is going to make you stronger the way YOU do it. Just like the benchers doing half reps, they are more likely able do do more wrong reps them someone who does them correctly, not really something I'd recommend someone try. "Hey I see your doing full reps, here try doing half reps with a bounce off your chest." I bet you cant do as many as me!

Maybe you mistook what I was saying. At least that's what I gather from your last comment. That's silly, of course you can't do anywhere near the amount of pull-ups I do regardless of how they are done, I never meant to implying otherwise.

Simply put, I believe that most would be surprised at how little advantage in sheer reps that affords (maybe 10 - 15%?). However, doing them in this way does reduce obviously have benefits when doing alot.

Again, I feel that I need to emphasize that single video I posted is not how I do all pull-ups, there are many variations I do. If I'm going all out on bodyweight then that is how I do them. Typically I would encourage a fuller rep range to get more bang for your buck out of each rep.

Also, if you'd like to be picky I was at the 2015 Mr. Olympia in Vegas and during one of the expo days a vendor booth was set up with a stage for a pull-up contest. You were on video broadcast to the expo and had to do it shirtless (lol) and they counted your reps. I was only able to manage 32 or 33 that day granted there wasn't an opportunity to do an actual warm up). I believe the winner did something like 43, but I didn't witness it.

I am 48 and 185#. My age is seeming to be a big limitation on training gains and I just can't get to 10.

Current max is 8 strict...

Bope you are your only limit. Figure out what is stopping you and change/fix it.

Unless an injury is prohibiting training than I agree. 10 is not in it if reach to do for most people (imo).

230lbs. I don't think I can do any pull ups. Haven't tried lately. Over the winter I'm going to cut down on my gym time and focus on getting a yoga practice going. But along with that I am going to do calisthenics with a focus on mobility improvements, and on top I'm adding a pull up training program to build the muscles I need to get pull ups working. The program is from this link

I've recently started to do pull-ups as part of my workout a few months ago. Right now I am 190lbs and can do 15 strict pull-ups per set. But I try to get in 100 per day spaced throughout the day. Seems pull-ups love volume, at least for me.
